Of what this game will probably be like with its population 2 months down the road.
Why?
1 reason.
It takes too long to get anywhere in this game. The skill system is so slow, it's preventing me from actually wanting to jump into the game and play it. Section 8: Prejudice had the same affect with its EXP system. It would just simply take too damn long to get to a reasonable level in that game. Which is a shame, because the game-play was ******* awesome. I loved the fast paced game play, the large team battles over massive maps. It was epic. But the population in that game struggled to stay above 200 people ON A GOOD DAY. Now, from time to time, there's usually only 20-40 people playing at any one time.
This is also the same reason why a lot of MMO players DON'T LIKE EVE. Because it takes too long to do anything.
The population for dust will drop like a rock because most FPS players aren't willing to spend 7 years in developing a single character. |

^If we stay with the same XP system. If you haven't noticed the cap system has changed depending on what people have been saying. I have no doubt it'll change again to meet something more balanced. Although the former cap system was to my liking but a lot of others didn't like it *Shrugs* there will always be a steady group of players willing to play because it's free and the experience differs depending on what you want from it. |

It doesn't take me long to find a game and play it. This is a FPS before it is and RPG, so the emphasis is on gameplay, not advancement. The gameplay is perfectly fast-paced, I can get a game with less than ten seconds of wait.
Section 8 died because it never started with a player base to begin with. It was just people seeing it on the PS store and saying "ohh, that looks kinda cool" then playing and saying, "oh look, another shinny game on the PS store!" Then leaving. |

Do you need to spend seven years to level up your character. Yes, but only of you are upgrading every skill branch there is to be upgraded. Which you most likely don't really need. Surely it will take some time to max out the skills you need (e.g. Heavy with HMG) but you aren't really supposed to get every everything prototype in two weeks. |

What makes you think the same thing wont happen to DUST? Because it's free? Yea, that wont save it.

I played section 8 prejudice quite abit and it was fun for the moment.
Dust has not dropped in players because its a closed beta there are no spikes in closed games.
They plan on fixing alot of the games mechanics. |

I spent my initial SP and do pretty damn well for myself on that alone. Granted, I'm playing a super OP heavy, but hey, I didn't need to wait 7 years ;)
I love the SP system right now, though my only complaint is that there's no way to get back any SP you may have missed in the week. There should be a daily cap still, but if you don't hit it, the remained rolls over to your next day, and so on and so forth, then all the potential SP you could earn is wiped at the end of each week.
So, if you can only get on a few days a week, but you play your ass off, you can still stay even with those who can play every single day.
Rate of SP is excellent though, love love love it. |

This game is going to succeed because there are tons of people who are going to love it. There are many people that play battlefield who left CoD because they wanted more depth. Well I think that there is going to be the same movement to Dust from BF. Then you have those that will try it because it is free and fall in love, next you have those who just want more than what game they are playing, and finally you have those who want their actions to be permanent the impact forever noticeable.
These are only a few of the archetypes that will flock to this game there are plenty more but this will be the majority of the population. Yes there will be a chunk who leave because this is not what they want but losing a chunk of the people we gain is not going to be significant.
I understand that a lot of people are scared that a game that they really enjoy is going to die with the release, just have faith of those of little. |

It's like EVE, don't try to do everything at once. Specialization is better then generalization. Players in EVE that just drift from skill area to skill area end up getting steamrolled in all areas by players who specialize. Players that specialize at reading and understanding the market and skill for it roll right over the buy and sell orders of people that treat it like a general store in the boondocks. |

The skill system is probably the least important measure of getting anywhere in DUST. It is just a means to an end. It is not the end itself or even a good reason to play the game.
Unfortunately now, in these last days of closed beta, it is the only tangible measure of progress. It is about the only thing to DO in Dust so far. Grind SP, unlock gear, grind SP, unlock gear, in order to grind SP to unlock gear, to do it all over again. What is it all for I wonder?
If that continues to be the only thing DUST offers players, then, yes you could easily be proven correct. That formulae works for WOW but basically that is all you ever do in that game. But if this game turns into the game we all want it to be, SP will only be one small part of the toolkit that will allow us to achieve the goals we set for ourselves.
Right now the battles are a means to gain SP. Hopefully in the near future, SP will just be another means to gain good battles.
There is no reason why you would need tens of level 5 skills before getting into the sandbox aspects of DUST. I am not an EVE player but it also seems a mistaken view of the game that it "takes too long to do anything" since there are groups out there that can get you into some decent PvP and PvE within a few weeks of getting your first account. From everything I've read, approaching EVE with a WOW mentality would be doing yourself a disservice as a player, as well as really limiting your possibilities in game.
Dust is meant to exponentially expand those player created possibilities. I hope it does just that. Then we will only be as limited as our imaginations. Or something along those linesGǪ Thing is, you can't take over and rule the galaxy as just one merc with a lot of SP. Having every single skill trained to 5 isn't going to do you that much good, in the end. If players are grinding SP with the goal of maxing out all of their skills so that they can then and only then finally start playing the game they will get burnt out.
Better to just play the game. There's already a lot more to it than instant battle. You can get a sense of possibilities to come as they percolate through chat channels, forum posts, alliance and corporation alignments, and the devs very coy lack of communication about anything having to do with Sovereignty warfare. You can let the SP go and start playing the game now, or you can burn out by sometime in febraury grinding Skill Points while waiting for something more to happen... the choice is yours. |
