Face the facts: Cliffy B is a punk. His engine is garbage (I'm impressed with what CCP has squeezed from it though). With the technical culture of CCP I think Crytek would be a better fit for the game and the company.
Practicality of changing from the dudebro (UNREAL BRAH!!!!!) engine: Depth perception is garbage. Always has been in the unreal engine. Batman Arkham city will show you just how garbage it is when you enable 3d mode. I want DUST in 3d too but Crytek can do that as well as handle great depth perception without 3d mode. Crytek also has a better texture renderer leading to longevity of the game and prettier stuff to shoot at.
Aesthetics of the dudebro engine and other preference.
CCP, again, kudos to what you have done with this garbage engine. Take the female merc's ass for example. A work of freaking art. Damn, thats a nice ass. For real. I think Crytek could sculpt that ass too, without subjecting us to the garbage of the dudebro engine.
Also, its on principle. Dudehuge (yes, cliffyB prefers to be called this) is such a **** (cite: xplay interview in which he tells Morgan Webb and Kevin Perrera(sp?) that there's a reason that he's making games and they are reviewing them) as well as a punk (cite the faces montage that he made at E3 when he thought he was the ****).
Crytek is licensed by the good folks over at Piranha Games who are developing the newest Mechwarrior game! And its beautiful! Albeit a little laggy but hey, their players get the satisfaction of knowing that they are not contributing to the sustenance of the dudebro.
Cliffy B might well be the Andy **** of game developers. Sure, he hasn't talked anyone back into being a ******* addict, which lead to the untimely death of well loved movie-film actors, but being a **** is still being a **** and discouraging that behavior where you can is a noble endeavor for sure.
Or create your own engine, like you did with Carbon Based, which is a technical marvel.
Best intentions,
Cassandra

Seeing the Unreal Engine logo appear at the start of any game always makes me feel queasy. I imagine the choice was made due to the scalability of the engine really. That and the developer's experience with the engine because, let's face it, who hasn't had to work with Unreal technologies before? CryEngine3 would work wonders for Dust 514, I agree, also dat Cevat Yerli, yum. |

They were using Carbon originally for Dust when they were thinking of doing PC only before deciding on console. Also, Crytek is nice and all. But doesn't work well for multiplayer since it focuses hard on looks . Also cost is a major factor. |

Considering that CCP's needs are pretty much unique, I suspect they'll loiter reluctantly around the Unreal engine for a bit and switch over to something designed in-house when they can afford to, kinda the way Bethesda did between Oblivion and Skyrim.
Pure speculation, that. But I can't imagine there's anyone else out there going, "If I were to design an engine to create entire geographical regions as needed and then run a great FPS war game with as many players as possible that interacted extensively with a PC-based MMO, how would I go about that?"
CCP is nothing if not ambitious. |

So you know all this about ccp and unreal engine but your missing something. How long, time consuming and loss of money it would take to switch over to cry engine. Think about it,ccp dev's would have to learn everything about cry engine, try and succeed at the eve and dust intergration with cry engine. Oh yea they been working on dust since 2009. |

Dude, I agree another engine would be better, but the CryEngine is not what you want to be using for an MMO, which this will eventually be once more meta game functions go in. If you look at the blog Chris Roberts posted about Star Citizen, he figures that his game will be able to support no more than 100 players per instance, and CCP has mentioned testing 64v64 at one point. |

Once ye have started upon thine engine, t'will be difficult to change thine destiny At least for the foreseeable future, we will be stuck with Unreal 3 simply because the engine is the very core of any game's coding. Changing it would require another full Closed Beta run, and would only serve to delay most additions to DUST 514. Plus the game is actually doing quite well with U3 as is. However, I will agree that U3 was picked for ease of use, and an upgrade would be nice in a perfect world. I am not sure how much different Unreal 4 is, but it could be used as the engine for a new Closed Beta upon the release of the PS4. Following the logic of naming, U4 may not be as difficult to change to as other engines. Yes, it's still Unreal, but it's at the very least not a 5+ year old engine. |

Yeah I'm aware of the workload that it would take and the amount of time and expense etc. I'm glad, though, there's still a company out there that I can expect to fully rewrite parts of the engine as its needed rather than just abandon the project once it ages and move on. - They have and are continuing to rewrite and optimize EVE.

I was more surprised to hear they were using it due to the licensing terms. Unless they worked out something special with Epic, to license the unreal engine you end up paying 25% royalty after the first $50k of profits. 25% is ridicultarded given todays options for creating games.
And yes- depth perception is ******. I hate that about the game. But I can't think of one FPS game that gets that right anyways. One day I hope! I kind of suspect once curved 3D TVs make it onto the market that will be more feasible. |
