New players to this game are going to be completely lost in the politics of New Eden. They're going to have no idea what in the hell is going on nor will most of them probably care. No one really gives a crap about Tristram and Deckard Cane but they keep clicking that mouse for better gear and more gold. Same principle applies here. The new players are most likely going to care about shooting red dots, getting SP and getting paid and little else.
EVE doesn't break character and it doesn't break the sandbox. Nothing is arbitrary, everything fits in within the game's universe. So why don't we have some sanctioned battles in Empire space with various gear restrictions that new players can chill in for awhile? They are broadcast all over the galaxy with billions and billions of New Eden citizens tuning in, and more importantly betting on every little detail. Current animosity between this empire or that empire is put aside for the sake of the spectacle.
ISK payouts would be funded by the massive amount of cash wagered on every battle. No sovereignty changes and no planets to control. Just some good old-fashioned killing to sate the people's bloodlust. The payouts aren't nearly as good as taking contracts but you can skill up (both SP and actual skill) without having to worry about having a 3 million ISK tank spawn on top of your starter fit assault suit 17.3 seconds after you start your very first match. You won't need money anyway since odds are all the expensive gear is going to be prohibited anyway.
Different matches can have different restrictions allowing an aspiring merc to both stay in their comfort level while also getting their face shot off. Hardcore players want to lolstomp the noobs? Fine, but you'll have to do it in a Type I suit with your 'Exile' Assault Rifle. New players spends some time there, gets some advanced gear and some tricks up their sleeve they can hit the big leagues when they want. Important to remember though, SP gain can be the same but ISK payouts would be much, much lower. Unless of course someone finds an honest, generous bookie.
There you go. Sandbox remains intact and everybody wins. Hardcore players can be out there in low and NULL quick as they want without playing for 6 SP per match while more casual players can take a little longer but not get discouraged by a protobear killing you every 5 seconds. A protobear that they can never "catch up to" SP-wise because a cap or some such nonsense. Even though there's nothing better than proto so it's not like they're going to get more powerful ad infinitum but whatever.
There you go...no more worrying about this cap or that cap. Hardcore players can get that SP and make the big bucks and casual players can play in matches that are more even and fun without having to worry how much more SP someone else has. |

Dunno how touch it would be from a programming standpoint but it'd be pretty sweet if capsuleers could actually make bets on the matches. More corruption, shady deals, and outright theft and only the suckers get hurt. |

Yea, I remember reading something like this but I wouldn't even know where to start looking for the link. Something like that is planned IIRC but I don't think CCP realizes they could tweak those future plans just a little bit and solve a lot of problems with the game that they seem to be at a loss to work out.
I've just been thinking that everyone, both CCP and the us in the community, have been going about this all wrong from the start. SP has never been the issue. I've seen a lot of people saying that gear is more important than SP and yet every solution I've seen involves some rolling cap or algorithm or some such. Gear is the issue, not SP. It's just like EVE. Your SP is a buffer or a slight advantage at best. Battles are won and lost almost solely on pilot skill and fittings.
I really hope someone at CCP reads this and starts thinking along these lines. Give new players a spot in New Eden, limit the gear while still within the sandbox, make a new sport out of it or whatever...but remember the disparity in gear has always been the problem and let the SP flow as it will. |

Yes, new players are having a terribly tough time.
No, it's not the equipment that is the main cause of that, it' only a part. Other factors (as in any fps) are: - Personal skill, combat: Knowledge of the weapons and game mechanics - Personal skill, combat: Knowledge of the map and positions - Personal skill, combat: Having the controls and gungame a second nature - Personal skill, other: Fitting skill - Character skill (SP): SP as if better bonuses - Solo vs team: Being with friends on comms is always better (planning and teamwork)
and what you mentioned - Character assets: Better equipment
And in the mix onto the battlefield will, ofc, be thrown in different situations and pure luck.
Player skill is irrelevant here. The better player wins. What I'm saying is to make everyone happy CCP either needs to balance gear or balance SP. Balancing SP is stupid because you have to do it across the board to everyone and a cap simply means that you'll never "catch up" to older players. More importantly SP is nothing compared to gear when it comes to giving an advantage. Here's some number:
Training Shield Control IV gets you a 3.46% over lvl III on a Type-II Assault suit with 2 advanced mods. Training it to lvl IV and switching to 2 complex mods increases your shields by 23.79%. A Type-B Assault suit with Shield Control IV and 3 complex mods has 44.11% more shields than the Type-II with 2 Advanced mods and 16.42% more than a Type-II with 2 complex mods. The difference between lvl IV and lvl V with 2 complex mods on a Type-II is only 3%.
Since damage mods are percentage-based you're going to get a larger increase in damage with an advanced weapon plus any secondary bonuses like increase blast radius, firing speed, accuracy etc...
Going from Armor Repair Systems I to lvl III increases the Basic Armor Repairer by 5.83% while switching to an advanced repairer increase armor repair rate by 50%. Lvl V boosts the advanced repper by 5.5% while switching to the complex repairer boosts your repair rate by 66.67%.
Everyone is so focused on SP and yet the benefit of them is tiny compared to that of the more advanced mods. So why is SP all anybody seems to want to talk about? Doesn't anyone realize that once you unlock the advanced modules the advantage additional SP will give you just gets smaller and smaller?
I know they have something similar to this planned but they need to change it be gear restricted matches within the sandbox to allow new players to have a fighting chance and build up some SP. If you're more casual then you'll have to stay there longer but so what? If you make it fun I feel fairly confident most of these new players won't even care about the rest of New Eden until they've got the SP to actually do something about it. Most people just want to shoot red dots...so get this SP cap garbage out of the way and let hardcore players do what they want to do while the noobs shoot each other in the face all day in balanced matches that are a blast to play.
I understand the concerns about the economy but honestly if newbies are just getting lolstomped by protbears all day they're not getting out of that militia fit anyway. |
