Hello, before you throw rocks at my face, let me explain why i propose this :
First, it isn't relevant for the actual beta, because our number of accounts is limited by the number of beta keys.
But when the game will go live, as a F2P, you can easily create a new PSN account, a new Dust account, and a new character, and have the passive SP progression for all of them..
Since it's inevitable and it would be pointless to design a way around this, maybe we can do it for everyone to benefit it, instead of just the min-maxers ones.
FAQ :
Q : I won't do multiple accounts, because it's cheating ! A : Yes, but others people will do it, and gain an advantage over you. And there's nothing you can really do about it.
Q : You're only suggesting it because you're lazy ! Do this secound account yourself ! A : Yes, but i'm (and i'm not the only one) will do it anyway, so what's the point ? I mean, it's like forcing people to resolve a sudoku grid each time they launch the game. It's painful, without any reason to do so, because it doesn't have much to do with the actual game (shooting people in the face). So yes, if you doesn't have multiple accounts, you will enjoy the fact that others people are wasting one minute of their life each time they switch characters, but imo it isn't a reason to oppose this.
Q : Will it have any unintended effect ? Maybe it will harm the game and the sandbox ! And we love sandboxes ! A : As i said, it doesn't have a big effect on actual gameplay (shooting people in the face). It's mostly about min maxing your characters. For a short term, it will not have a big effect, but for a long term, people with multiple accounts will have a distinct advantage over players that have only one account. You can say that they can't use all of these accounts at the same time, so it isn't that much of an issue, but what if they sell these characters ? In EVE-Online, selling your characters is accepted by CCP, and done on the EVE forum (but only against ISK iirc). In the case of dust, these people can setup like 10 accounts, let them skill passively, and sell them a year later, for a lot of isk. Of course, if all of your characters on an account earn SP passively, this will be even easier. But i still think that the player with only two characters that doesn't care about having another account will be in a better situation with both his characters earning SP passively. Finally, the character selling issue would have been present anyway because of the F2P nature of the game, and i think the prices for a character will reflect this, given the nature of the open market that we will enjoy.
Q : It's pretty sad that people will create multiple accounts just for selling purposes. A : Yes, but there is already a counter against that : you earn SP by playing the game. So yes, people will make money about this, but a new player isn't sensibly at a disavantage if he decide to specialize early.
Q : HAHA, i have a great idea that you didn't think about ! What if CCP forbid character selling ? A : Of course they can, and it will stop most of the charater selling. But there will still be people doing it illegally, and CCP already knows that some things are hard to fight against (like, let's say, player behaviour ?). Also, it doesn't solve the issue of a player using three accounts for himself and having better characters that someone with three characters on the same account, and that created them at the same time. Also, another side effect of my proposal would be to decrease the number of accounts, giving more accurate statistics. Because CCP will not use a cheap tactic to artificially boost their number of active accounts. Right ? RIGHT ?

EDIT : No modifications done to SP earned in battle. You still earn them the same way as it is now.

I still think no, making a solely passive SP reliant character would be ungodly slow and there is a cap of passive SP you can get without spending before anymore will flow in I believe. I base that on the fact that after last reset I set passive SP on Nova, played 2 games then went inactive for a few months. When I came back my passive SP hadn't gotten me all that much and had stopped since I hadn't be playing/spending. So yes you could make another PSN account and make another char that got just passive SP but in the long run It'd take many months to achieve what you could in weeks and by then the power players/corps will be well established and ready for anyone using this option. |

Well, i should have explained myself better : the system for earning SP is the same as actually (ie : you gain passive SP, and you gain SP at the end of each battle).
But currently, there is only one character on an account that benefit from passive SP. My proposition is for each character of an account to earn passive SP.
No changes done to SP earned after a battle. |

If i remember correctly before Codex all characters could gain passiv sp. Whether this was Bug or CCP just changed their mind I don't know. |

I thought that only one account on PS3 has online access. In my experience only the main account is allowed out.
Also, if someone wants a character like that and have a PS3 then they can do it for free. Big deal. |

1. EVE players have suffered many years with the same problem. We are only allowed one character at a time to gather SP on a single account.
Reasons: First. You cannot gain rapid SP on 3 characters all designed for different things at the same time, pretty much allowing you to surpass other people in a specified field of expertise. i.e. If you want to make a pilot specified to a certain ship, you still have to wait out that time period.
Second, it allows you to enjoy the game for a longer period of time, which CCP is infamous for. Even on their pen and paper games, under "White Wolf." They don't want you to play their games for just a month or two, and unlock everything available. It also allows a real life feel to it, as some would have the opinion. Example: No matter how big and bad you are, there's always someone better.
Another point of it is to have each character specialize in something. Another EVE example, If you make three toons, you can have one become say a PVP pilot, another for researching and developing your ships/ BP, ect. And the third can be an Indy toon/Merchant, whatever you want. But they cannot all progress at the same time. So even though you can have each specialize in that certain field, (and you can.) They will not progress so quickly as to surpass, or hinder the fun of gameplay for others as well.
I think that if they intended all 3 characters to gain SP at the same time, why not just remove the extra two characters, and allow for triple the SP on one character? Same reasons as above, only different situation. Hope this helps. |

You can't apply this line of reasoning for Dust, because of one major difference : EVE run a subscription model while Dust is going to be F2P.
The money thingy in EVE prevents you to do multiple characters improving at the same time. But there isn't such limitation in Dust. Meaning that you can have any number of accounts you want (it takes what, 10 minutes to create a PSN account and the mail adress needed ?). Meaning that the player doing it WILL have the advantage other the one not doing it, and having all his characters on the same account.
CCP already did a very smart thing : Make so that your passive SP is only half your progression for a day (the other one being active SP, providing you play enough to reach the skill cap). So that a character relying purely on passive SP will improve at half the time of an actively played character.
For your first point : Your character can't surpass other people, because skills have a max level of 5, and it's the same for everyone. At this point, the character doesn't make a diffrence anymore, the outcome is decided by other things (like fittings, player skill, etc.)
For your second point : It changes nothing in our case : Since Dust will be F2P, you'll be able to do multiple accounts. So giving passive SP for only one character isn't something done to enjoy the game for a longer period of time, but an arbitrary limit that doesn't make sense, and isn't adapted to its context (ie : it works for eve because it's eve and has a subscription model, but it doesn't translate well to Dust).
For the third point : It's the same for Dust. If i make three toons, i can decide to do a scout, a logi and a heavy (for exemple). Except that as it is, the one deciding to take 30 minutes to create three accounts will have them progress at the same time (which will soon enough compensate the initial 30 minutes investement). And the people that won't do that will be at a disavantage.

Because allowing triple the SP on one character =/= having three characts growing up at a smaller speed, and that it would not fit in the current balance of time invested in the skillpoints. |
