PLEASE read the whole OP before commenting.
The idea came to me after me and my little brother discussing this thread we both read about boarding enemy MCCs to destroy it quicker once the shields are down.
My idea is that: 1) Null cannons (anti-MCC guns, the lettered objectives for Skirmish) should NOT fire automatically, but should be manned. 2) Null cannons should have limited ammo, requiring capture-the-flag style retrieval of missile packs to reload. 3) MCCs should move quickly around the map to add a bit of challenge for the null cannon gunners.
Imagine taking a seat in the cannon like this (click it) and firing missiles at the enemy MCC yourself. This would be way more visceral and fun then having it done automatically.
It would also add a sense of vulnerability; while you are sitting and firing at the enemy MCC, you can't defend yourself from an enemy soldier sneaking up behind you and killing you. This would make teamwork and squad cohesion more important.
Capture the flag... I mean missiles Since missiles run out, they have to be replaced. Missile packs spawn every couple minutes at many special neutral supply depots known as missile supply depots (MSD). When a missile pack spawns, each team has to race and fight each other to capture the missile pack before the enemy does. Missile packs can be picked up and carried by infantry, and are the size of swarm launchers.
This adds another layer of strategy. MSDs would essentially act as important seconday objectives to add depth to the game; not only would the team have to just capture the cannons, but they have to actively work to supply the missile packs, and prevent the enemy from getting them.
This adds a new layer of teamwork and specialization. There would be a niche for specialized "taxi" LAV drivers dedicated to getting the missile-pack carrier to the depleted null cannons. There could be specialized runner scouts dedicated to carrying and transporting the missile packs with speed. There could be specialized body guards dedicated to making sure the missile pack runner gets to the null cannons. There could also be specialized vulture squads to kill enemy missile pack carriers, and then steal the missile packs.
MCCs should NOT be stationary, but should be quickly circling the map. This would make actually hitting the MCC a bit of a challenge, and thus more fun.
Maybe not, this isn't really that important for the idea, and it could make MCC spawns unsafe depending on where the MCC is flying over... though it might actually prevent MCC spawn camping. I want it if it can work though
Multiple null cannons is still better than one Null cannons should have a cooldown period between shots. This way if you only have 1 null cannon, you could have the majority of the missile packs and still lose because you aren't doing enough damage over time. Controlling multiple null cannons and dividing the missile packs among those null cannons allow for more frequent firing at the MCC, and thus more damage over time. It would still be possible to win with only 1 null cannon, but it would mean you would have to starve the enemy of missile packs, and it would take very long (giving them lots of time to turn the tides).
* Would also be cool if the null cannons looked like very massive and and scary.
Thank you for reading.
EDIT: Seems like I need to clarify this. You don't have to sit in the null cannon the entire time. You get in and shoot the MCC, when its out of ammo and waiting the cooldown time, you can get out. |

I like the idea of manned null cannons but instead have them come as installations that can be called in/built or whatever. As of right now I think once more players are allowed per match this might work better. My concern is how would one obtain points sitting in a null cannon the whole game? Would they be aimable and count as AA as well? |

Having them as installations (built in or called down) would be cool. Start off with a limited amount of built in installations, and the commander can buy some more from the marketplace and deploy them on the battlefield to gives his team an edge. Well once the current missile pack is depleted, the player can leave the cannon. Maybe guard it from enemy capture until more missile packs are brought to the cannon, and the cooldown time finishes. They would have to be aimable if the MCCs move around (which I would like), though I don't think you would want to waste your shots on anything other than the MCC since missiles are limited, and there is a cooldown.

Manning the NULLs I like, but maybe it would be more interesting if it only provided an efficiency boost such that a manned installation provided TBD% more damage than unmanned. This would make it possible to play defense or offense. |

I like how this would help prevent MCC camping and give players more options to safely drop down where they would like.
It would be cool if MCC commanders could change the elevations and flight paths of their MCCs with preset or custom flight pattern options. For example, they could fly in circles, ellipses, osculating circles, and rounded polygons as flight paths.
There should be a minimum amount if time that the MCC has to follow a set path and be able to set chains of flight patterns for the MCC to automatically follow. This would make it so that commanders won't need to focus most of their time on this and prevent them from having overly unpredictable flight patterns that would overly tax gunners' accuracy. |

This reminds me of a noob moment I have when jumped in to a installation and start shooting the mcc. XD But I say yes add it we do need more game modes. Sounds like our version of ctf now we need king of the hill or one mode I would love to see is confirm kill infantry only. |

As a tweak to your idea, how about a new manned null canon that only becomes use able once certain conditions are met.
Rather than WP, how about controlling 3/4 of objectives? It would speed up total redlines, but close matches would need coordination from the team with upper hand to hold letters in order to keep the new manned null canon and protect the gunner too shooting the MCC.
Could well lead to more dynamic battlefields. |

I really like Sytonis Auran's suggestion, and would use it to build off of KAGEHOSHI main idea.
Let's make manned null cannons a second hack so to speak. Once a certain number of null cannons are controlled, team owned null cannons can be hacked again to allow players to man them. Manned turrets would work like installations: they could have variable rate of fine, but would be prone to overheating.
If a manned Null Cannon were hacked, it would jam. This would stop it from shooting at the opposing MCC until the turnover period was finished. This is to add a risk and reward element to the new null cannons - You can win the match faster, but you risk doing no damage at all if the enemy takes control.
I would refrain from using ammo to refill the null cannons to keep the game mechanics as simple as possible, as well as keeping the average game time closer to seven to ten minutes.
Very nice idea, however. PS |

I hate to be the guy to burst every ones bubble here but this is a bad idea. Who would want to sit and shoot at an MCC for an entire match; it would be boring as hell.
The notion that there should be ammo packs to capture makes Dust seem like it is some arcade style shooter when it isn't. The mercenary groups would be prepared before battle, so it makes no sense to run around and capture magically appearing ammo for their major installations like null cannons. I am going to stop myself there otherwise I will be here all day. |

1) You don't have to sit in the null cannon the entire time. You get in and shoot the MCC, when its out of ammo and waiting the cooldown time, you can get out.
2) The ammo would not "magically" appear, they would be manufactured by nanites within the the installation, nanites like the ones in your nanohive that manufacture your ammo. Its only arcady if there is no explanation, you say its arcady yet comply ignore the complex strategies that would develop as a result. The null cannons do not belong to the mercs, they start out neutral.
Bubble is intact. |

The idea itself is well built. But it wouldnt be my first choice as an addition to the skirmish mode. In fact, all skirmish needs is to NOT be skirmish 2.0...
Anyone ever questioned himself on why in hell are those null-cannons off when you get on the maps ? I mean, why in the world would they be off ? Out of kindness from the defenders for the attackers ?
Skirmish 1.0 was, and remains, the only viable game mode to give a feeling of conquest to the game. Skirmish 2.0 is just a "run-around in circle" hacking stuff kinda mode. I will never understand that change... |

I really loved Skirmish 1.0, I would like it as a separate game mode, and this idea I'm proposing as well. More game mode variety would really be nice. |

Three point maps need something more. Currently it's hold 1 and fight over 1. Anything to throw a spanner in would be welcome. 5 point maps have enough variables between the multiple objectives, CRU's' and turrets.
I realise now my original idea was unwittingly close to Escalation from MAG. |
