The game still feels very 'meh', is that the kind of imperssion you want to give for the open beta? I really hope you have some kind of update that comes out on the 10th, otherwise I believe its too early. |

It's still going to be closed beta, we're testing the mechanics of the two games interacting and getting a head start.
There will be a little content added before full released and a graphics overhaul but don't expect a miracle. |

There aren't even 24 vs 24 games yet. Corp battles 8vs8 lol. I have bigger games in CoD.
My prediction for next build? Unstable garbage. |

Yes, there are a lot of rough edges. But with the current build we have enough of a foundation to go ahead with. It is time to pull this train into the next station.
The game may lose any number of players that may not be impressed with things as they stand. However, the best players will see what the game has to offer and hopefully stick with it through the meh. With each new expansion there will be a chance to bring in new players and impress them.
The opposite risk, that is, of stalling out in endless closed beta and never putting any sort of game together for players at all, is at this point a much worse risk to take, in my view. |

I've heard people throwing around Jan 22nd as a possible Open Beta date, so lets just run with that for the next 20 seconds or so.
CCP probably has a decent slate of features (including new game types, expanded corp matches, allowing buy/sell orders on the market, etc) that they want to release, but they will need to see how DUST works on Tranquility.
So, they drop us on TQ on the 10th, then possibly do a content release on or around the 22nd, once they have hammered out any performance and stability issues.
Why risk doing both at the same time? If something goes wrong, you don't know if it is load or code.... |

It's pretty easy to deduce something when you look at the bigger picture as a whole. |

It would also allow them to keep things secret for release so people don't capitalise on the changes and it would also help keep the build and patch size down. |

I applaud your optimism, but it's a meh game at best and will probably remain so with the low player count.
Please don't give me they will add more players later because it should have been tested in closed beta not after. |

I would say that rushing is the last word that would describe the progress CCP has made (from my perspective, since first stumbling across videos of the 2009 fan fest announcement to happening across the 2012 fanfest Playstation Home events, to getting into the beta, to today) in getting DUST 514 out and available for anyone who wants to pick it up and play.
Glacial. Maybe. Slow as syrup in January.
I am almost of the opinion that the only thing that will help kick this thing into gear and lift it from meh to something unimaginably better is releasing it to the public soonest. CCP might take a lot of lumps and there might be a period where hue and cry rules the dayGǪ but it might help bring focus on the game and inspire the makers to tighten it up.
There have been a lot of improvements in the beta so far. And a lot of "testing" different stuff out. Or, to put it more bluntly, dicking around.
The game, as touted, imagined, and in potential is a massive and baroque beast. And like any such beast the amount of work that ends up going into executing even what at first seemed like the simplest of ideas can be daunting. Exhaustion can set in. Perspective can be entirely lost. Some aspects of the entity can be reworked and reworked until they are overworked, muddy and dull.
All of these potentially detrimental processes can become exponentially worse when a project like this is not given a firm deadline. The tendency can be to get lost in a labyrinth of pushing different parts of game around trying to get it exactly right but with the end result of getting increasingly more lost and turned around.
Sometimes the very best thing to do is just take what you have, give yourself a deadline, and bring it into the light of day. That initial blinding flash of light might be painful and the whole thing might look more like a debacle than a smash hit.
But as this is not a "game on a disc" and as CCP have shown themselves to be very capable of sucking it up and getting things straightened, or at least righting the ship and moving in a better direction (Don't play EVE, but have done me homework) out after f'n the kittens up, I say it will be much better in the long run if we are not given the luxury of languishing in "work in progress" mode.
Get this monstrosity (in a good way, DUST 514 can grow up to be such a beautiful beast, but not if it never leaves the comfort of the womb, shell, capsule?) out the firkin door already. |

just gotta wait.
one rule of thumb about most things in life:
"i won't promise you things will get better... but they won't always be the same."
that's about the best you can hope for in beta testing.
when more people show up, when clans actually have something to do when the substance is added, the real meat, not this tdm crap...
but that's all about waiting. if you're gonna beta test games, my suggestion is test a bunch of em at the same time because it helps to have other games on deck when certain games hit that down time.

Open beta for a free to play downloadable game = game is released . They are charging money for their currency and their payment model has been in effect since the first day you could purchase aurum. The big question is if what CCP did with eve, build a game over a decade can happen with a console based FPS . I'm worried bc people will shelf the game and never look back. Ps3s have very limited hard drive space and I don't see people keeping this game for years until they promise it gets better. |

And when doing something as fundamentally insane as merging PS3 DUST into PC EVE on a London-based supercomputer, for sure it's the 'meh' code they're gonna use.
Once that proves stable, they'll be eager to trot out some of the 'wow' asap, preferably before open beta.
My biggest concern right now is the controls. The core mechanics seem ok(but not awe-inspiring), but the controls are distinctly sub-standard. If DUST gets released to open beta with the controls it has now it will be a mistake, a widely-reported and widely-reviewed mistake.
These controls will drop any rewiewer's score of the DUST open beta by 1-2 points out of 10. |
