Eve players, how do alliances work in Eve?
Since some of you are Dust corp players what does that imply for Dust corps?
Do it. Don't do it. Do it, then stab them in the back. Do it but try to avoid getting knifed. |

I love the fact that there are 350+ reads but no responses.
Sounds like the Eve I heard about. |

You might want to try the EVE Forums for a more definitive answer bud.
The only thing i know about alliances personally are that if War is Declared on an alliance then it is also declared on every member in that alliance.

I'm not completely sure- I believe it's more or less a supercorp (many corps and members within it) |

It is a very general question. That's probably why there aren't many responses.
In short the answer about alliances is that that it varies (a lot). I would say that alliances help to define a culture of a group of people and what they want to achieve. Until you know how space in Eve is divided it will suffice to say that alliances get corps together to organize around certain objectives depending upon the space they are in. Alliances in 'highsec' or the safer space are normally mainly industrial, faction warfare, educational, or niche pvp oriented. Because of the rules of engagement in highsec, corps and players are limited in how fighting happens there. Alliances in lowsec and nullsec are increasingly more oriented toward pvp and risky pve content, but also a little more self-sufficient industry-wise, making more of what they consume. This has more to do with market proximity than anything else. Finally, alliances are able to own and maintain sovereignty in nullsec, creating their own empires. Additionally, they do such things as standardize fitting doctrine for their members (and manufacturers), making it easier for fleet commanders to dictate the coordinated action of his fleets that have been known to number well over 500 people at a time.
When it comes to culture, different alliances have different rules for joining and participating. Some are more casual some are less so. Some accept players who are pretty new, while others, in an attempt to limit spying only accept carefully vetted older players with access to end-game super weapons that take a year or more to skill into.
Alliances make money in different ways as well. Some take space and rent it to friendly corps, others are purely industrial- riskily making and selling massive titans that take weeks to produce. Others are mercenaries, pillaging swarms, and some are moon miners who corner the market on valuable materials. |

Additionally, only corporations can be members of alliances. As a single character, you can't join an alliance without joining one of its member corporations, or having your current corporation join the alliance. |

@Beren Hurin and @Arlon Physson, thanks for the responses.
I suspected the bit about being in a Corp but Beren's long answer explained the culture which helps as well.
The alliances were unclear but hopefully the similar goals can be a unifying aspect between Eve and Dust.
From a Dust Merc stand point I just want to be in a corp that has similar goals to mine. KDR not being the most important thing on the planet. Winning and profits are. Actually helping trainees versus saying they will until the application is accepted. Real teamwork versus personal kill ratios. Since the 1st it is becoming more likely I am the only Logi running on my side. Unless someone else joins mid match.
Probably a little touchy because the last couple of hours were a complete waste. Blue HAV running over Blue LAV which was running down Blue Snipers. Two Blue DSs crashing and burning because they ran into each other. The current play style is more like idiots in a sandbox. It is reminding me about the early releases that left me wishing I hadn't jumped into a Beta. |
