The vehicles in Dust need some work. The physics are horrible! These are supposed to be futuristic military vehicles and yet the handling is not even close to being on par with today's vehicles.
Hit a small bump or hill in the path and the vehicles bounce all over the place as if they are full of Helium. Once you touch back down on the ground it's impossible to gain control again and I never know which way I'll be facing once I do finally gain control back.
The weapons systems and everything else aren't awful but the actual physics of the vehicles needs lots of work before release. |

You get it though.

The physics are terrible with vehicles and it needs to be improved before release! Bottom line! |

quote=Go Away Putz]Thought about this later.
Do any of these type of games even get close?
Borderlands - ugh. Halo - I want to drive a truck over the designer's entire life. Crysis 2 - nothing but rails, just a carnival ride. Mass Effect 1 - the lander, what a horrible contraption. But it had rail gun and it would drive almost vertical walls. Mass Effect 2 - some lame floating tissue box that caught on fire if it was actually used as intended. Rage - while not as bad, at least Id Software knew how to tweak it so it was fun to drive. Not that I wanted to drive in that game.
I played Halo(something) with my son and he let me drive. I finally figured out that the designer had never learned to drive nor played a racing sim/game. They apparently learned everything they knew about driving from the back of Mom's minivan or Gramma's Buick Roadmaster.
Others will need to fill in various FPS as I normally avoid them. The Eve/RPG connection is what got me here. [/quote]
LOL...funny post!
TBH though, I really can't answer because I haven't played most of those games. I have played Borderlands but it's been so long that I can't even remember what the vehicles were like.
I also played Rage a bit and remember hating the driving in that game, although I do seem to think it was less terrible than this one is.
I think I get your point, driving in FPS games is never a great experience. Although I see your point I don't see why it needs to be that way. Just because decent driving mechanics and vehicle physics have always been poor doesn't mean that developers must stick with the status quo for eternity. What would be the harm in spending a little time making vehicles not only easy to handle, but also fun to drive?
Of course, I'm no developer and don't have any idea why they do what they do so it may be asking too much. Perhaps it's just too much work to really hammer out decent driving mechanics for a FPS. Would make sense why driving games are driving games only and all development effort goes into making fun vehicles.
@ the poster who brought up the point that LAVs aren't 4X4...I get that too. But they also aren't light as a ballon (or at least shouldn't be). I'm really not even complaining about the steering or flat road driving so much as that when you take one over the slightest bump or hill, it bounces all over the place like a poorly thrown football. Once the wheels come off the ground you have no idea which direction the thing will be facing when control is finally regained. Even once you get back control it takes a few seconds of back and forth to get it back on track.
I don't think it's asking too much that when you hit a bump in the road you should keep moving in the same direction you were traveling as long as you hold the wheel straight. Now I've not been airborne in a car since my wild and crazy (at times unintentionally suicidal) teenage years but I do remember that the several times I did come off the ground I learned quickly to hold the wheel straight and not panic...as a result, I never have ended up off of the road after catching a little air.
Even at high speeds, a vehicle (2 or 4 wheel) will continue to travel in a straight path after losing contact with the ground (not counting extreme jumps) as long as you hold the wheels straight. Might bounce around a little but will be facing the same direction once you touch down again. I only wish the same were true in this game but the slightest hint of a bump sends me off on a wild and unpredictable course.
Everything else with the LAV steering can stay the way it is for all I care!
WOW...that ended up being way longer than planned...Sorry for that! |
