I've been playing Dust a lot in the past week (and reading the forums for ideas) trying to think of solutions to the player gap. Honesty what makes the new players happy do the opposite to the veteran. And this manifests into other problems like unnecessary nerfs and over used over powered guns. I personally believe the devs wont move on until they think the problem of balance is "fixed" ( I mean come on they only fix what we tell them to fix) ,but I think that this "problem" should be redirected from balancing between vets and new players to just separating the two. So I think this idea could solve a lot of problems for both new and veteran players.
If metaphorically Dust 514 is a sandbox then then to satisfy it's inhabitants we make a bigger sandbox for veterans to to fight and enjoy over. However to encourage a new and growing player base you take a reasonable chuck of your sandbox and designate it to the new.
On launch their is going to be high sec, low sec, and null sec right? Well players will start at high sec (the safest) as "recruits". Now this would serve as the live tutorial or first level in the game. Every new player will start as a solider of of one of the races (yeah I know my EVE history) and do a battle vs.
1 computer AIs or 2 another race of of players new to Dust (I like this 1 better)
and go learn the game through a controlled environment with no veteran players or upper tier gear. The new players shouldn't pay for the gear they loss or have to worry about making a fit just yet this should only be a 1 time series of missions. Their should be the 4 basic militia fits as the first class for the new. And form their take players from the FPS aspects they know and start to show a beginning moving towards the Dust 514 aspects. The first missions should be relatively easy so people can get the hang of it and simple so not to overwhelm. But for the those new to the game yet have mastered FPSs you could sort of promote them and give them a rougher hard introduction to Dust and let them be know to the vets.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------OFFTOPPIC--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Speaking of High sec training (yes the VR training ) the VR training should should be something like temporarily using a non active planet for a fee or not if they own the planet. just a thought
Now after the new players complete the starting missions you can throw them out into the world but not to far to be in the mercy of the vets , but enough to let them venture to the unknown by themselves.
Which brings me to the vets. No veteran player would take much pride or fun or competition out of slaughtering the new (i believe). So in low sec should be where corps and Orbital Strikes and paying for your losses start showing up in the game. But for those who want the frustratingly hard console breaking experience that Dust 514 promises should move to null sec where s*** gets organized, deadly and expensive. Encouraging people to join corps and big alliances or all your territory will feed the powerful. In other word this should be a place of virtually untouched chaotic paradise. What happens goes. But that's how I envision null sec just pure player driven corruption.
To sum it up new players get their peaceful corner of the universe where they learn and be simple. And hardcore players can have the rest and make life as hard as they want for each other.
So what do you think about my solution (if it even is one or not) and if you see a flaw point it out or mention your solution to this problem. |

A good idea for any other game. Unfortunately, you're now in the Eve universe.
I appreciate that the n00bs are going to have a rough time starting out in the world of Dust which is why I agree with the VR PVE ideas. I have also made a suggestion [link here] for an alternative to the skill cap that will help newer players get into the game whilst not being a grind for everyone.
The exact reason as to why I do not think your idea will work has already been beautifully illustrated by the Eve online learning curve. I'm affraid I can't describe it any better for you than that, but here's the link

En... I beg to differ.
There will be those types of players. For tears, gigles and why not...
Fundamentaly I agree on this aproach since this mimics EVE model, but there needs to be careful balance here.
Balance of risk vr reward in these 'new player' friendly areas. These should not reward much of ISK or SP compared to how risky they are. And one point to make would be that corporation battles don't award SP, so either way vets need to gather SP same as new players. And what better way to do so than completely pubstom new players to ground. |

They are amusing when they start running around in circles. Then they stop. Fall. Silence.
Makes me laugh every time :-) |
