The thing FPSers have to adjust to with Dust is to slow WAY DOWN, and work more methodically with a squad. If your squad isn't on comms, and you don't have a good balanced group with logi, uplinks, range, CQC, working in tandem, then yeah... you're gonna die a lot.
So, do like 95% of the people who post here and do well do, put your squad together before you go into battle. Then make a basic plan, and do your best to execute it.
As far as guys in prototype gear, call them out for your squad and focus fire. If they die, they lose hundreds of thousands of ISK, if you die you lose basically nothing. Ah, thanks! Gonna spend the next couple days getting to know some peeps in the game....find a decent group of folks to hang with. No one I know from previous games (clan mates, etc.) are playing this game, so it's going to take some socializing on my part....no prob!
feel free to join our public channel "subdreddit". Bunch of friendly dudes who specialize in logistics and team play. We're by no means elite players, but we hold our own. Also, depending on how you see it, there's an interesting quirk to subdreddit: we don't recruit in-game, we get our playerbase... elsewhere. So, there's no pressure to join our corp when hanging out in our public channel, because we wouldn't accept you anyway. :) |

There's that whole 'Skill' thing again...I'm still on the fence as to whether quick reflexes and good hand-eye coordination are things that can be considered 'skills'. Being an 'old man' such as I am, I've come to find that my gaming 'skills' fade with time. An actual skill is something that improves over time as it's practiced and honed. Chess is a game of skill....kids are much more likely to be 'skilled' video game players than grown adults.
I'm a skilled father, HVAC tech, Automobile mechanic, webmaster, lover, husband, painter, woodworker...and yes...gamer. Of all these things, my 'skills' in video gaming are the only ones that have decreased with age...everything else has improved over time.
Like I said....I'm just not sure how comfortable I am with attaching the term 'skill' to something that fades with age and time rather than increases. And with a game like this where there's so much option for advancement, gear can go a long way toward leveling the playing field.
Besides....what good is a skill (whether perceived or real) that benefits nothing but a meaningless, useless and worthless player score? Not so sure where video game 'skills' fall in the great scheme of life.

I'm just not quite understanding it for some reason. I mean, I get the basic gist of it's purpose and storyline, I just don't quite get the game-play.
Looks like it's rapidly evolving into a 'Pay-To-Win' kinda game...am I wrong?
The tiny bit of 'Help' files I've read told me that I should retreat against enemy players who outmatch me...EVERYONE seems to outmatch me! I spawn in, shoot, get shot, die....that's about the full explanation of my game time in Dust. I know there must be more to it than that.
I see it's quite a complex program and there's a whole lot of intricacies and dynamics to the game and I'll get all of that eventually. Right now I would like to just know how to last longer than 3 seconds before dying. If I could just stay alive long enough to get some kills or accomplish some kind of objectives I might find some interest in this game. Right now though it's just frustrating, irritating and boring.
Anyone have any tips? Is it possible to be an effective player without buying a bunch of crap in the marketplace? start here

I do quite well with just the basic militia starters. Sure, I die quite a bit. But, I'd die all the same even in different stuff. Mostly because I have slower reflexes then some of the people in the game. I still manage to get kills and hacks in. |

I'm still waiting to see a "mfw" post when people realize that the Aurum weapons sometimes require most CPU/PG than their counterparts. And even if they find that the items does more damage with less CPU/PG, that there is a variant just like that but instead you use ISK.
I would give examples but I don't feel like booting up my PS3 right now. |

TEST Alliance Please Ignore. dreddit is the main corp.
Theyre good buddies of the Goonswarm Federation.
After they help explain how this works so you understand in beta you need to bear one thing firmly in mind.
Once the game goes live it is in your best interest to shoot TEST and Goons in the face.
You have been warned.
Until the game goes live theyre usually pretty cool about helping newbies. |

Yeah same here using just raven, exile and militia bpo stuff I can always take out most players using proto suits. |

Its hard to give you advice because everyone has a different approach, my approach has been to upgrade tanking skills like Mechanics, shield management and fitting skills like electronics, engineering, light weapon upgrades ect.
But good tools can't make up for a lack of knowledge, you need to think about how you are playing and whats going wrong, do you run along paths directly to an objective or do you curve around keeping cover available?
Do you aim down your scope to shoot people or spray with your cross hairs?
ect ect you could probably google "how can i be better at FPS games" and find a lot of handy theory. I'm actually very good at FPS games. I'm quite experienced at them and do very well. However, this is not a FPS like any I've ever played before. Can't tell whenn I'm being shot, not much indicator of how much damage I'm doing to an enemy I'm shooting, Seems like 2 bullets kill me but 2 full clips don't do any damage to enemies...etc., etc. And no...spraying bullets is not my MO. In fact, down-sight aiming is something I do as a reflex, it's something I do so often it becomes a fault at times. If you're looking for a decent FPS player for your squad/team/clan/etc. you could do a lot worse than recruiting me. The problem here isn't FPS skills, it's the uneven matching of weapons/armor/etc. LOL...a 'Google search of how to play FPS' is quite comical...maybe someone with quite a bit less experience with such things could benefit...I probably have well over 10,000 hours experience at FPS games. I have plenty of knowledge about FPS games and I've played nearly every one of them available on both PS3 and PC for hundreds (1,000s in some cases) of hours. I have nearly 2,000 hours into my favorite one alone. Believe me, knowledge of how to play FPS games is not the problem with DUST for me....I'm definitely steering more toward the equipment side of things at this point. EDIT: BTW...I know exactly what I'm doing wrong! I'm dying too easily! I'll go toe to toe with anyone in any straight up gunfight on any FPS on the market. When I'm dying in a 1 on 1 duel against a guy who can kill me with 2 bullets but who isn't harmed by 2 clips of my bullets...well...let's just say that this is something new to me, and will take some time adjusting.
Here's an actual tip on how to take out guys with better gear than you.
Head and neck shots.
That's also probably how they take you out with just one or two bursts.
When I'm in the zone that's how I'm also able to take out groups of four in close combat without taking too much damage. |

Same old posts I have no trouble in my malitia taking out proto, I dont seem to last long enough in a one on one to do much than take out there shield in starter gear.
Occasionaly you get lucky i'll give you that but 8 times out of 10 the proto guy wins unless hes low on health or there are 2 or more on him.
But i guess the fans will deny this as always |

The amount of bullets to kill someone gets absurd really quick. The nature of militia, advanced, proto gear will always make for an unbalanced game. I can't really offer a critique or solution other than grind baby grind.
I would like the game to be fun and playable BEFORE I have to commit vast amounts of time to grinding my life away. That's just me. |

This game is just all about SP and the way to get it and that is what appealing to RPG players so much but really rejecting FPS players.
Nothing works till its Lvl 5, the battlefield experience has been under done for markets and a bad gear concept.
In fact people were only getting disconnected and dropped from games because game connection wasn't Lvl 5 ha ha .Thank god I invested in Sp in that skill early on ha ha.
Everyone always screams corp it up but really a game that has terrible public matches never really succeeds. Your trying to hook a player in one or two games, how do you do that with a spreadsheet opening and non corp experience on a bland battlefield. |
