Currently roaming around in an assult dropsuit farming SP/cash towards Heavy skills but unsure on which is better. I believe a build or two ago people were saying one was better than the other but don't recall ever hearing why it was better...

Zombie shark?
On a serious note, armor makes you slower and you either need a logi beheind you or an armor repper. Shields regenerate on there own, but (and im only going on EvE experience here) shields bloat up your signature radius. So your easier to hit and see on the minimap.
Best thing to do is, try both shield and armor and see where you think you should go. Just make sure you have the relevant shield and armor skills trained up. Regardless of which you choose, the skills allways come in handy as extra buffer and the ability to change your role later on if you decide to switch from one to the other |

And one normal grenade will kill the entirety of your armour. What's your point? |

Armor is also easier to skill into. The skill that boosts your armour amount is at the bottom of the skill tree (infantry mechanics I think now). Shield on the other hand takes a lot more skill points, and your total shield hp doesn't start going up until you've sunk a lot of SP into it. Aim to train both eventually. Dust doesn't punish dual tanking like eve does, and kind of requires it.
For solo work I've had great success with assault fits that use an armor repairer with complex shield extenders. With an organized squad though armor is great. |

lazer does less damage to armor (80%) while more to shield (120%). |

The Type II heavy dropsuit seems to be favored by most for 3 reasons best I can tell:
1. Shields regenerate faster than armor can be passively repped.
2. Slightly better mobility.
3. Utilizing dropsuits more advanced than type II seems relatively cost ineffective at the moment.
I'm guessing there will be more armor heavies running around when CCP gives us active armor hardeners, which I believe were mentioned in the chromosome patchnotes. I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm mistaken about that. |

But they have a fraction of the blast radius which diminishes rapidly at range. |

They both have the same effective range, and drop off around the same area proportionally. |

Two people in my corp prefer the type ll models due to if you get split up a little bit he can still hold himself before I can get back to rep their armor. They also prefer the CPU and PG numbers, they say that it better suits the modules want to run. |

i prefer shield variant heavys cause they melt much faster when getting hit by my laser. The longest time a type 2 heavy survived my laser was exactly 2.5 secs. |

Skill into armor because you will unlock the T1 Heavy first, then upgrade shields and play with it. I actually am kinda dual specced, I try to keep a balance to make it overall more effective instead of really good in one but weak in the other. |

If your running solo the shield heavy is the best option by far. You regain your shields alot quicker then armor.
Now if you have a logi bro with some advanced reppers. :) Lets just say armor is the way to go. if you play smart he can rep you through anything so keeping him alive is very important and you can gain a gaint amount of HP while running a armor heavy. But you will be really slow and you need a logi to rep you quickly because of the plates taking repper spots. Usually this combo works best if your run skirmish while if your a ambush man you might like the shields a little bit more. |
