Ive done a search and I've read the manual and some other guides but I seem to have missed something and I haven't had enough chance to play yet to test things. If I use a scout dropsuit, do I actually activate the stealth by pressing a button or how does it work? |

I believe you may be thinking of "Optical" Stealth which currently hasn't been implemented. The "Stealth" everyone here talks about is Profile Dampening.
Profile Dampening 101:
Every dropsuit emits an electronic signal known as a "Profile" when they preform certain actions. When the enemy Dropsuit detects this, it appears in the form of a Red Dot on the enemies Radar. This profile can be reduced by way of purchasing Profile Dampener modules or decreasing your Dropsuits profile naturally via the Dropsuit Command and Profile Dampening Skills.
Keep the faith. |

This here answers it. Thanks. Hopefully they implement it soon. |

More in-depth version of the above answer:
Scouts have a lower "scan profile" than other suits. This means they can get closer before being flagged as enemies. As a result, you're less likely to be shot at long range. They also have the highest "scan precision" which is basically the counter to "scan profile" and allows you to pick up stealthy targets.
You can further accentuate the advantage with the "Profile Dampening" skill, and with "Dropsuit Command" as well as by using "Profile Dampener" modules on the suit. There were scanner modules in Codex, but they were bugged and got removed. I never used them, and don't know if they're back now.
Assault suits have less of an advantage than Scouts, but are still much more stealthy than Logi or Heavy suits, and can be pretty sneaky with high-tier skills and multiple Dampeners. They also have much less pronounced scan precision, but if you centre your crosshairs on a target, they still light up, so if you're cautious, you can work around the lost scanning performance.
Scan Profile also makes your marker disappear quicker (from the HUD and the minimap) when you break line of sight, so you can double-back sooner without revealing your sneaky plan of sneakiness. |

an even more in-depth version of the above answer: (though this is cut and pasted from another post i put in my corp forums and it has an emphasis on heavies. too lazy to re-type it.)
The heavy suit has terrible scan precision and profile stats so putting points into profile dampening and dropsuit command will lower your profile by 5% per rank, and having points in profile analysis makes it easier to spot the bads. I run a precision enhancer in one of my high slots and it's helped me get the drop on people. even if you don't use the mod it's worth it to have the passive bonus from the skill.
a quick word on precision and profile. a dropsuit's profile is how easy it is to be spotted by the enemy, while the scan precision governs how hard it is for you to mark reds on you and your squads hud.
If a dropsuit's profile is lower than an opposing players precision then they will not be marked in the hud unless the red is aimed pretty much right on them.
On the other hand, if the precision is lower than the other person's profile then they will be marked on screen much quicker and possibly show up on the minimap without any direct line of sight.
Having a low profile has another benefit - it makes your mark disappear faster than normal when you take cover letting you slip away easier.
these skills are very important for a heavy because of just how terrible their profile and precision stats are. for comparision, here is a badly formatted chart.
scout - precision: 45 - Profile: 45 assault and logi: precision: 50 - profile: 50 Fatman - Precision: 65 - profile: 65.
as you can see this means fatties stick out like a sore thumb to everyone besides other heavies while not being ale to see anyone marked on the hud without them being spotted by other players first or already being aimed right at them. These numbers also don't reflect the fact most people have a couple points in dropsuit command, dropping the profile by 10-15%.
I have 3 ranks in profile analysis for a total of 15% passive bonus to precision, and factoring in the module adding another 20% it comes to 35% better precision dropping my suit's stat down to 42.5 letting me tag assault suits easily provided they haven't dumped more than three ranks into dropsuit command.
i rely on passive bonuses from dropsuit command and profile dampening to keep me hidden. i have 35% combined from the two skills so that means i don't get tagged very easily by enemies anymore.
