So, I'm trying to get a feel for the gameplay, without having to learn everything about equipment and skills first. I tried just jumping into a game and was repeatedly killed at the spawn area, or very shortly after. I really hope that it mostly has to do with the fact that I was using the default assault load out. If not, it means that I suck so bad at this game that I can't even get out of the gate. It may very well be the latter, since I never play FPS games.
Anyways, as I wait for my update to download, can someone recommend some basic skills/equipment that I should get before I try my next match? Maybe some tips on how to get started after I join a map, so I don't just die instantly. I can't even make it to a strategic location, or find any of my team mates before I am suddenly dead.
I really want to like this game. I even went out and bought a PS3 just to play it. But I am so frustrated. |

I really want to like this game. I even went out and bought a PS3 just to play it. But I am so frustrated. Lowering your profile might help, either with skills such as Dropsuit command or modules like the profile dampeners. Shield extenders or armour plating will allow you to take a few more hits before dying.
Are you playing ambush, or skirmish? When I first started, I found that I got ganked a lot in Ambush as everyone's just out to kill you, and almost all of them are better than you, either in skill sets, or equipment (if not both) while skirmish has set objectives that you can work towards capturing to earn yourself some WP and, or course, the more WP you earn, the more SP and ISK you'll get at the end of a game.
Militia gear is a great way to try out the equipment before you spend SP on the skills to use them properly, try out different guns to see what works for you. Don't be afraid to play around with the starter suits, you won't run out of them. Also, if you're not sure if you want a skill, you could try creating an alt character, spending their starter SP to train up the skill you're thinking of to try it out before committing to it on your main character. |

I've been trying both skirmish and ambush. I played a few more rounds. After getting spawn camped and dying 3 times before I could even react, I was finally able top get going abd get a few kills. I guess it will just take some getting used to before I am able to enjoy a full round.
I'll try out the different weapons and dropsuits, as you suggest. Are the starter suits useless or is it me? I feel like people are killing me in less than a second, where I have to unload a full magazine on a person before they die.
Also, is there a way to join an empty game to explore the maps and test the weapons? |

The Starter Suits are the weakest of the weak and it's almost never advisable to use them. What you should do is use the Militia fits to experiment with what you feel you want to do.
I should mention that you should use what you "Like" or "Want" to use, not what is "Effective". Militia fits are extremely flimsy but the Type-1 and above fits are where the real meat of your fit is going to be. Along with the Advanced rank weaponry is where your choice of weapon will develop into something great.
No there is no way to purposefully join an empty game. If you can i would find a squad.

Join the LFSquad channel in game. you can often times find people to meet up with and playing this game with a squad is more enjoyable than with no squad.
Go and find yourself a corp to join, too. any corp worth joining has a public corp you can join and squad up with some of their members for recruitment purposes, so that way you can figure out if you'll like a group of people before you sign up, and if a corp isn't willing to help a newbro onto their feet they aren't worth joining.
While you are finding your new murder-buddies you should be working on two things for your character - tank and gank.
there are three ways to make your character die less, or commonly referred to as "tank"
Shield - Get a good shield, through just getting as high base HP as you can muster and/or making your shield regen as fast as possible.
armor - get a bunch of armor plating. this is very useful if you play with a logi who will be repping you - if you don't then it'll be tough to keep your hp up in a sustained fight.
stealth/speed - get your profile as low as possible and sneak up on reds, or snipe from afar. either way this is all about getting them before they can even think about getting you.
a quick explanation about the profile - just look at the stats of a dropsuit and look at the suit profile stat and the scan precision stat. the lower the profile is the harder it will be to be detected and the lower the scan precision the easier it will be to detect enemies.
Gank is pretty simple - it's all about getting more damage downrange. find your style and rock it. if you have questions about any weapon in particular then just ask and I will answer to the best of my abilities.
though, before you go and dump all of your points into getting the best weapons and shield extenders you should also make sure you can fit those weapons and modules onto the dropsuit. Don't neglect basic fitting skills that boost your cpu/pg or ones that lower the cpu/pg usage of items.
good luck and happy fragging! |

Very helpful tips. Thanks everyone. I will try out the militia gear to see what best suits my play style. I will also pick up stealth for sure.
As for joining a squad, I do plan on it, but I would prefer to figure out a little more about the game before I do. |

I ran in militia gear for a long time, there is nothing terribly wrong with it. Keep in mind that the people killing you in two seconds have three advantages over you:
- Better gear
- More experience playing this game
- Better shield/armor/damage/scanning/etc due to passive skills
My recommendation is for you to stick with militia or other free fittings while you save up money (for skill books) and SP for any skill that will make your free fittings better. Just look at the descriptions of skills and it will be pretty obvious which ones will help you. If you have AUR, make sure to buy all the militia BPOs on the market, and you should seriously consider getting one of the Type 1 dropsuit BPOs, too. If you have all these BPOs, you should also put SP into the skills that increase the PG and CPU output of your suit, since doing so will allow you to fill every slot on the suit with BPOs (which have higher CPU and PG requirements).
If you follow the above advice for a few weeks (or less if you play more than me, which is likely), you should be able to put 2-3 levels in a bunch of useful passive skills, get some experience with the game, and save up a couple million ISK. Then you can think about moving up to better gear.

I really want to like this game. I even went out and bought a PS3 just to play it. But I am so frustrated.
STEP 1: Change your ******* name.
I use default ASSAULT - FRONTLINE all the time too. It doesn't stop me from killing T1-T2 dropsuits and lower. Keep in mind many players have points that make them do 10+% damage, and have 10+% shields/armor/regen so you'll be outclassed almost all the time too.
I put many points into Logi stuff to help others. You'll get fewer kills if you're logi, but you get plenty of WP and people will love you. I do not think this is for you. Stick with Assault suits if you want to improve your game play. Use Assault Rifle (AR) and scrambler pistols. They made a dumb change to grenades so you don't have to cook them anymore. Grenade throwing is something that you'll have to learn how to do too, but the current build (I'm sure it'll be changed in the next) will not help you with this skill at all.
However, it comes down to this: practice makes perfect. That's why you should go AR and assault (some go scout, but if you don't FPS you'll probably learn assault suit faster). A great thing to do is watch movies made by the best players, and take note of what they do that you don't, and why it works. They may do less too. Unfortunately, DUST is still in closed beta, so you're not going to see any decent movies from good DUST players.
The best suggestion that I can give is that you should split your time between games. Since DUST is still in beta, it's not a smooth, polished, and shiny finished game. If I were you, I'd play assault for SP in skirmish (hopefully with a corp, but keep in mind that the noobie corps might make you worse with bad advice). Once you get near daily cap, or too frustrated to continue, take a break and switch to another FPS game. Get your ass kicked for a while in that one. The controls in DUST are slow as molasses, but I'm sure that's just a beta thing and they'll up the sensitivity and such to a normal level on release. If you can only play moderately well with the slow speed, you'll have to learn everything all over again when they make it higher.
Keep in mind that there's a skill gap (not the kind of skill you earn by not playing...) between new and old players for FPS games. The older players learn maps, and they also learn player patterns. You're going to get your ass kicked, but that's how you get better. That's true for almost anything. If you've never played basketball before, don't expect to beat Michael Jordan in a 1v1 pick-up game.
If you play another popular FPS game, you can get plenty of good help from watching vids and just playing. You'll also be fighting a much larger player base, so you'll have better matchmaking and competition. If you force yourself to like beta DUST and get killed all the time, you might burn out and not play it again later. I'm guessing that you're from EVE, so you're more likely to come back to this game. Don't stop playing DUST entirely, log on weekly, learn the maps and what works and what doesn't, and relearn it when they change.
I wouldn't normally post for someone with a name like "Derp 514" because it just screams troll. Troll or not, I have high hopes for the improvement of your FPS game. You are frustrated that you keep losing, but clearly have a desire to win and to dominate other players. I'm not going to give suggestions for other games on forums. Just make sure it's a pure FPS game if that's what you want to get better at. You'll probably be freaking out at the pace in it, but that's what a single player campaign and bots are for.
Also, stay out of TDM games. The side that wins is the side with the most clones. If you're constantly dying all the time, you're seriously hurting your team much more than you would in node control. |

perseverance. This is the first ps3 game I have played and the the first fps I have played. I still suck but not like I did, and by the time the game launches I expect to be a moderate player.
If you are use to Keyboard and mouse then get one for your ps3 that will help.
Expect to get owned a lot but remember its beta, plenty of time to not suck prior to launch. Don't worry at all if your numbers are bad they will improve both as your experience grows and as your sp level rises. |

I do what i can.
Also I have an idea for some of the new players out there. It worked really well for me when i was starting out but it's really risky and i warn you that it may not work for you, it only worked for me because of my personality.
The easiest way to reference this is by using the movie "The Dark Knight Rises" as a analogy. Don't worry i won't give away any major spoilers. Anyway... during the movie, Bruce Wayne is unable to accomplish a certain task do to the fact that "he does not FEAR death." and this, instead of making him strong, makes him unable to accomplish this task. It wasn't until he put himself in mortal danger and regained his will to live, that he was able to accomplish his task. As Immortal Clone warriors, some of us have forgotten how to FEAR death. It's the fear of death that can push man to unbelievable heights and do the impossible.
What i did, unknowingly, back during the beginning of Codex was make a fit that included for the first time a GEK-38 Assault RIfle. Which brought the cost of my usual fit to around 40K per death. During a period of time in my life where getting 100K after a match was excellent work
Naturally, this was a Logistic Dropsuit and as such had kitten all for Armor and Shield. So anybody with a Light Damage modifier could breathe on me and take out my Shield and good Teammates that cared about my safety were few and far between. Despite this i wanted to see what a fit like this could do. So i proceeded to the battle finder and went into an Ambush match.
What i then found was a feeling i hadn't felt since invaded by a Black Phantom for the first time in Demon's Soul's. If you've played you know what i'm talking about. That feeling that if you DIE then EVERYTHING is lost, that you MUST defeat the enemy in front of you. Some call this the desire to win... some call it the will to live... some call it "Panic"... I call it Mortality. That sense of panic gets to you and it's almost like your own life is being threatened and adrenaline is pumping through your veins. It's scientifically proven that when a person is put in a dangerous situation their sense of pain is dulled and their 5 senses are heightened in order to ensure survival. A base instinct among all living creatures.
This, in essence is what happened to me. I"m not sure why, all i know i was overcome with a sense that i "DID NOT WANT TO LOSE MY NEW FITTING CUZ IT"S EXPENSIVE!!!" Call my a cheap kitten if you want but... I came in third place that match, as a Logibro without a squad, with no deaths, and for the first time ever my KD went UP.
Keep the faith. |
