After playing this game for a while, I realised how the balance of this game is wellGǪ.iffy to say the least. To put it bluntly, those with more expensive weapons and higher SP will likely destroy newer players with less. Throwing everyone into the same pit is hardly fair, and will really push players away from this game because the vets will dominate the newer players.
Why not implement a set of rooms (GÇ£InstinctGÇ¥ rooms) that only allows the default classes to be used, as well as all skills being disabled? This way, new players can play in these rooms to learn and understand the game mechanics, gain some ISK and SP, and slowly move into the normal lobbies without these restrictions. To make the normal lobbies more attractive, just make them drop better salvage and give out a bit more SP and ISK.
Another option is to make GÇ£SP CappedGÇ¥ rooms, where you can only play if you have below the SP cap.
Doing this will cause a lot less frustration for the influx of players which will join shortly after launch. |

Several points here:
1) Not 'rooms'. This is not going to be a typical lobby-based shooter and thinking of it in this way is only detrimental. 2) Segregation will come in the form of High, Low, and Null security space. These have not been tested yet. 3) There are no 'default classes' as you seem to put them. Perhaps you mean starter kits. 4) To quote a movie "The only way to get better is to play a better opponent." |

There will be E-Sports coming to Dust later, it will be called Gladiator Arena. Stuff like skills being turned off, and items being of the same grade for everyone will make sense. |

I agree with Gemini.
Segregation will begin with the various star systems being grouped by security status. Eve Online has that working model that has been in place for over nine years. High sec systems present very little in terms of rewards unless you want to dive into piracy, theft, and scams. Go into low sec systems and the rewards go up but so do the dangers. Go into null sec space and you'll find yourself in a world where there are no rules and the dangers are extreme but the rewards are worth it.
But even high sec space will see corps flourish under the banner of helping new players get their feet wet without putting too much pressure on them. Eve has two such corps known as Red vs Blue and Eve-University. One deals with PVP and the other covers general game play aspects respectively. Imagine such corps emerging for dust. This will encourage use of the social aspect of new eden which is important in the universe.
But of course, eve online also has a few star systems that are treated as starter systems. These starter systems have special restrictions in place that prohibits scamming, can flipping, ganking, some PVP, etc. and they are basically the safest systems in new Eden. But these starter systems have so little rewards and are restricted in size so much that they are purposefully designed to encourage new players to head out into the wild and learn how to survive on their own. Kind of like a mama bird leaving the baby bird behind and thus the baby bird has to choose between staying behind to starve to death or leave the nest and learn to fly. Along the way the baby bird will encounter predators that are out to get him. But in time, that baby bird will adapt and become predator itself.
One is correct to assume that this system will discourage a large number of players that are so use to the whole carebear mindset of having someone holding their hands; but it's a system that will draw in a sufficient number of players that are intrigued by the cut throat culture. Eve has seen nothing but yearly growth because if this. It's population may not be large compared to world of Warcraft, but eve has something that other games don't have: a powerful economy backed by ruthless game play driven by players who are some of the most intelligent to date for the gaming world who take spreadsheets to a whole new level.
Dust may not have such complexity at the moment and it may be difficult for a new player to get by, but in time dust will grow. We may have a system in the future where new players can thrive a bit and learn the ropes, but eventually those players will have to leave those newbie systems and head into the most dangerous areas of space if they want to progress. |

@ the thread - the matchmaking system sucks right now. It will get better, so I've read. Then there's all the other stuff above as well. Just give it time. |

So from what I've read in this thread, the matchmaking will be worked out so you're not thrown into the lion's den each time. That's a good start, and I do hope this game excels because it's so very different from the typical, linear FPS. Hopefully we can iron these kinks out before launch, make a good impression on the community who's interested but haven't been in beta.
@ Gemini, I used some generalized FPS lingo, but that's what I meant when I mentioned rooms and default classes. |
