The basic concept has been proposed before but I'm bringing it up again.
It's impractical that future super soldiers wouldn't train some form of martial arts and while I'd love to actually go into some quick-time hand-to-hand combat with another player in Dust 514, it probably wouldn't be used very often and would be a lot of work/time/effort for something you might use once in a blue moon.
I digress. Any rate, I do think that we need a sort of "combat slide" to go from sprinting, sliding across the ground and into a crouched position. Rolling would work as well but in a first person perspective it might become "queasy le shaky cam".
So there's that.
Now, back to the fantasy realm, there could be racial combat evasion based on their particular styles. I can't honestly see an Amarrian Heavy doing much jumping around so I'll just skip that one... Caldari Assault suit slides, Gallente Scout suit rolls - I'm sure you all see where I'm going with this...
All sarcasm aside, would be nice to have a slide into cover feature... |

I do see where you are going with this. It is a bad idea. Cover features don't work in FPS games. Diving and rolling would be abused like crazy and would ruin gunfights. We just need strafe speed to be fixed.
It has been brought up before and I wish people would stop suggesting this idea. |

Firestorm Zulu wrote:Brink bombed, fyi Brink didn't bomb because of the movement system (which was actually excellent). It bombed because it was marketed towards competitive clan play while not providing even the barest minimum of required features to make even the basics possible. When you literally couldn't create a team and join a game together, and had to invite people manually, one-by-one as the timer to mission start counted down regardless of a lack of players, and regardless of players being on the wrong team because of the autobalancing. it also bombed because within a week of release, they'd had to patch out the ability to have whole teams of players, and forced reliance on the game's terribly broken AI, which has gotten MUCH better since launch, but is still potentially game-breaking in its own right at times for different reasons depending on difficulty.
Syndicate is another game with a movement system that allows players to slide into cover, and it worked well enough there too.
Also, ever heard of Crysis?
But in saying that...

And why do people keep assuming that "slide into cover" means "cover system". It really, REALLY doesn't. |

I would love sliding. I don't want snapping or gluing a character to a piece of cover though; just being crouched regularly being an object is enough. I would love rolling. I think it would be fine in first person, or at least be worth a try. I would love a martial arts combat minigame for when 2 mercs try to melee each other at once. This really would be interesting and innovative, my little brother discussed something like this before, and I totally forgot until now. |

What else would you call it? Regardless it strikes me as a gimmick mechanism, and I don't see it working in this game. |

"Slide to cover" means you have a movement system that allows you to slide, and for obvious reasons, doing it out in the open is a stupid idea, so people won't use it for that, and will instead use it to...

When ppl say 'slide to cover' I think of ghost recon style diving to cover and sticking to it. I guess I misunderstood that. In any case people will use it out in the open and in the middle of gunfights.
The only other example of something similiar I can think of is dolphin diving in black ops. Fun to do maybe, but doesn't add anything meaningful to the gameplay. I believe that this mechanism would be the same in DUST, a novelty feature that has no real purpose. |
