At the end of it, imagine my surprise, joy and anguish upon finding that it had returned to my ownership. This, obviously, shouldn't be the case.

Went out of the tank because it became too hot and his tank was about to explode, someone killed him and hacked his tank.

When you say "stolen" do you mean an enemy hacked the vehicle and used it or your fellow teammates took it? When an enemy team hacks it, the vehicle should belong to them (that much I agree on) and at the end, all the parts should go to the player who started the hack. If you mean the player who was in it at the end of the game should keep it? then I disagree. I find that plenty of corp members will give their vehicles to their fellow corpmates in a battle to use, they shouldn't be punished by losing it when the match ends anyways.

I got sniped while calling it in. Then an enemy came and hacked it before I could get back to it, just to clarify

It almost happened to me. I got back just in time. They were hacking it, so I threw a grenade at them and hopped back in and shot them up really good I did. A similar situation happened when I got sniped while I was calling it in, but instead of it getting hacked, my own teammate stole it! You can never find good help these days.

In this case team steal will be less a threat for a tank diver. +1 OP and this ^ Hint to all not in the know : If you hack and steal a vehicle make sure it gets destroyed before the end of the game or it goes back to its owner at the end of the game just like what happened in the OP.

I have a bit of advice for you HTFU, if I can risk my tank, saga, or viper hacking so can you.

So enemies can hack a vehicle to their side, but can't operate it without the necessary skills, so it would go into their inventory until they can use it. Friendlies have to hack your ride as well, but if they don't have the skills to use it, they can't have it at all, because there is at least one person who can operate that vehicle on your team by logic.
