With a combination of searching for bits and pieces of info on the forums and a little testing here and there on my own, I feel that I've come to a basic understanding of how scanners and spotting work.
To explain how scanners work I first need to explain how spotting works. In order for the orange " v " to appear on your screen two conditions must be met:
1. the enemy must be in your line of sight, or within the LOS of a squad mate. Blue dots do not relay what they see to the whole team. Don't believe me? Just pull up your map. Believe it or not, not all the blue berries out there are shooting at rocks.
2. The enemy must be within range of your drop suite scan radius . By default this range is somewhere just before the outside of your radar but can be extended by using modules (there is only one and it is in the militia mods section of the market) . It's also worth noting that sniper rifles seem to extend this range infinitely when scoped.
That being said, the scanners of Dust 514 seem to work differently than the UAV's, MOV's or sensory equipment of other games. It would seem that the only instance any of my scanners (equipment or vehicle based) seem to work is when the target is already painted. In other words you can't point an active scanner at a building expect to see through walls; it would seem that the real use for the scanners is to relay the location of the enemy to your team once you or one of your men have scouted them out.
Knowing this, it seems to put a huge damper on electronic warfare since the scanners are of no use to the user or even his squad mates. Hopefully (and damit I mean hopefully) with the advent of artillery turrets, the "top down fire mode of the mass driver" and true OB's the active scanners will show their true power.
EDIT: looks like scanners are bugged and will be removed completely until fixed . confirmed in patch notes. |

I'm pretty sure the scanners don't find people because they are buggy and broken, not because they are designed that way. |

thats a nice opinion. I'm just telling people how they work right now so that they don't get the wrong idea when they spec into them. |

Ty for this Ugg, The aspects of profile/signature radius and scanning seems to be shrouded in some kind of mystery, or at the very least broken. Reading this made me grasp this somewhat better.
GǪ even thou I still believe (the graphic/visual issue aside) that profile dampening is flat out broken. This based on no change in suit-stats with dampening mods, and/or skills in affect.

Scanners do not work, CCP explain to the principle of the action! Active scanner can not find even a tank! |

I fully realize the Devs have more than enough work however a DevBlog on how the scanning system works/is intended to work is really called for. With out a clear statement regarding the effect of each mechanic and how they interact we're going to be able to do very little to test them effectively (I think the OP has covered most of the ground we had to work with). |

Scanners are not broken(bugged maybe). What I think people are not noticing, is that there are 2 skills that reduce profile but only 1 that reduces analyst. & the fact many smart player invested in profile dampening to help protect their more expensive fits. & very few if any have invested in analyst & sensor upgrades. Makes it seem like scanners are broken, when really the enemies profile is simply just lower than your scan precision. I have Proto scanners w/ Adv enhancers, & in most cases if enemies are in range of my mini map, it'll light up like a Christmas tree. But high lvl players, are & will be a problem for scanners.
Edit: I'll post when I get complex enhancers, & share my results. |

I have seen what scanners look like when they "work" and I have no recollection of them bringing up anyone who didn't have a LOS form a 1st perspective or from another squad mate.
Also when using a directional scann it is easy to tell who has skilled into a lower profile sig as their orange blinking icon disappears rapidly (If it shows up at all?) after you spot.
If anyone is wondering how the directional scanner works then think of it like a camera that takes a single "snap shot" of whats in front of you; this unlike the vehicle scanners that send out multiple pulses out over time.

The active scanner is not directional, it works in a 360 degree radius. But it seems to be broken because it does not detect infantry, only installations and vehicles (not sure about HAVs). See also this thread and the post I made in it a while back when I was testing out the scanner. |

will do. right after you read it.
There are multiple post on there that seem to up hold my theory of how the scanners work. And on other guy who said that it worked in a 360 degree radius had Zero like and was from your corp. |

I was just stating my personal observation, which is that the active scanner is not directional, but working in a 360-¦ radius. This post was meant to be helpful and informative, but feel free to believe what ever you want, I don't care. As a side note, the fact that someone is in the same npc corporation like me or that they have 0 likes says nothing about the validity of their postings. |
