Please don't burn me in the stake for referencing Eve News 24, but I wanted everyone to shower in the tears of these Bot running scum bags.

Let this be a warning to Bot users. CCP will swing the ban hammer like a drunk Thor in a bar fight if you are caught botting. |

That read disgusted me. You need bots to feel like you can keep up? Then EVE obviously is a broken game.
ANY game that REQUIRES bots to keep up or enjoy the game needs deleting.
Sounds like people in EVE don't play for fun - they play to get the e-peens stroked.
So I hope I'm wrong about all this and someone can set me straight - cause that article made EVE look like total **** and I'm looking into buying EVE when I get a new computer new years eve. If it's true I can't be a high end player without bots doing stuff for me - then I can find another game where the only bots around are the ones who hold a channel or keep your stuff organized. |

EVENews24 isn't exactly well regarded among some members of the EVE community. That said, despite it being about bots and botters it seems a relatively informative piece. Some guys go on to their forums and read the posts there for their own edification or amusement I guess. Sometimes we read things like this and get a little second hand information that seems fairly reliable as a result.
Anyway, take into account that the guys who are quoted as saying such things are bot users, and you might generally consider they have rationalized their purpose behind it. Either way, they are botters, and like the guy said, they do it in every game.
Besides that, EVE is a challenging place, and players who have devoted much time and effort actually do dominate much of the game. There is no reset, aside from Serenity, (Chinese EVE), only one server for all of North and South America, Europe, Asia, Australia, and the rest of the world, and the game has been going for 9 years + like that.
That doesn't mean you can't make your mark, and players who are new can't fit and fly ships they are trained for provided they put in a little effort. Bots are not required, and in fact damage the economy by creating an influx of what would be otherwise unavailable minerals and resources.
This effectively increases supply and results in Ore and minerals being less valuable, which means more hours--mining--are required to achieve a certain amount of profit. Granted, it also means that ships and fittings are more cheaply produced and cost less, so it sort of balances out.
What does happen though, aside from a major market shift towards botters producing the valued minerals required for manufacturing, is that it moves that supply out of players hands and into the hands of the botting accounts. Depending on the botter, this may mean a number of things, all of which will damage real players enjoyment of the game, ability to compete, etc..
Just imagine competing with a Corporation that flushes the market with cheap goods which you yourself, despite relevant assets and facilities cannot produce.
..or imagine that you are fighting someone in PvP who bots and uses the ISK generated to pay for his ships, something which would require time and effort for you to do, yet requires him nothing aside from turning on a program when he leaves for work.
Then just ask yourself who the real problem is.
Players acquire assets, resources, power and many other things in game over time. Depending on who they are and how they go about doing so, that time may give them virtually unlimited resources. That's just how things work, and it doesn't necessarily affect your game-play in EVE online as a new or even mature player.
Some have limited market influence, others attempt to control, and still others attempt to buiid even more unlimited resources. They don't all bot, and in fact, the richest and most influential of them in all likelihood never have, and probably don't have much tolerance for those that do.
What you are seeing are excuses; people who cheat need them.
EVE is hard, but it can also be easy, depending on who you know and who you are. Botters don't usually find it such as they are too willing to reach for their crutch.
For others, it's a matter of perspective: Do I have enough to make my game enjoyable? Should I try to get into a Nullsec Alliance? Is mining for me? Do I like PvP? How do I make more ISK, to pay for the style of game play that I enjoy?
All questions you need to ask if/when you start playing EVE. You can always just trial up and see what happens along the way though. That's what I did when I started back in 2008-2009. Still haven't joined a Nullsec Alliance, but I have been a few other places. |

Bots are not needed in EvE. It's a lot of people using bots to farm stuff to sell for real money mainly, both perma-ban worthy violations of eula.
There are legitimate ways to make more isk then mining/ratting/mission running with bots. For example industry, trading items in station, wormhole space, moon mining as part of alliance.
Somebody that needs bots in eve is like somebody that needs a modded controller lag switch or whatever else in a fps. They only need it because they are bad at the game, or are average and insist they should be better then everyone.
CCP seems better at enforcing and more worried about bots. The article mentioned people caught using bots and banned at every update to eve. So don't even think about using one in eve, it's a matter of time to a perma-ban that would probably include dust too. |

The "Market" won't crash or spike, you may find a few individual items change in price slightly if there's a huge number of botters banned but in reality there's only a very small % of them in the whole player base, not enough to impact things the way you suggest.
Mining and ratting bots don't bother me at all to be honest, all it does is generate ISK for owner. Its the market bots that concern me, they have an impact on everyone. |

Yea, I've got a Mining/Manufacturing Toon, a PvP toon and a Trade toon. Mining bots are annoying but you can still make *decent* ISK for how passive mining is to do manually. Don't really care about bots when it comes to combat or whatever. But holy hell do I hate market bots.

Nah. I'm Henry Haphorn from Eve Online. I'm mainly a mining player with one alt being a hauler and market tycoon while I have an additional alt for ganking mining bots.
In addition to what Mars El'Theran said I like to point out a few things that wasn't brought up in this thread.
In case some of you have not heard, Hulkageddon is a yearly event that lasts from a couple of weeks to a whole month depending on the participation of the players and the sponsors. It is an event centered around the utter destruction of ALL mining vessels throughout all of the high-security star systems. It is not all that clear about the original motivation of this event which is always hosted by none other than Helicity Boson, but many will argue that its intents may include but not limited to:
1. Trying to keep the mineral prices high so that mining can be a profitable profession once again. A few of the players who admitted they were bot users said that one of the reasons they bot was because the mining profession was not profitable at all and that they have to mine a lot of ore to compensate for the lower value of the principle mineral that is tritanium (mined from an ore called veldspar) so that they can sell in bulk in the market. Little did they realize was that the market is dependent on supply and demand and if the market is constantly flooded with these minerals and demand drops, the price will drop as well and thus the bot users have to mine more in the same amount of time to compensate. It's a self-inducing punishing that is cyclical in nature and ultimately the bot users will ruin the economy right before they ruin themselves. But by destroying these miners, Hulkageddon participants will ensure that the mineral prices stay up so that there is less incentive to bot.
2. Controlling the market. As of early this year, Hulkageddon has received an official endorsement from Goonswarm Federation via a rewards program that pays anyone or any group 100million ISK for every 10 exhumer ships destroyed. On top of that, the program is now officially permanent and thus ensures continued encouragement to destroy these ships even after Hulkageddon V: Unholy Union is finished. On top of that, the Goons also established a monopoly on technetium moons in null-sec space. Technetium is a critical moon mineral needed for the production of tech 2 components that are needed for the final assembly and availability of Exhumer class mining ships. With such ships being constantly destroyed, and with a good influence on the market that ensures miners keep buying these ships from the Goons, the Goons have become the Eve Online equivalent of John. D. Rockefeller.
3. Crush them bots. I'm not going to joke with you. Eve Online players, particularly the ones that follow the rules set by CCP, HATE BOT USERS!!!! We hate them with a passion. Because of this, many of use have gone so far as to infiltrate suspect corps, bot forums, etc. in an effort to track down the violators of the EULA/TOS (end user license agreement or terms of service) and destroy their ships without warning, provocation, nor regret. We are a bit disorganized at times, but when a bot is discovered, rest assured that bot user will see no rest nor peace until he renounces his botting ways.
In my case, I have done my fair share of ganking miners. Sometimes I gank miners just for the hell of it even though I am a miner as well. But often times I do some hunts. I use my alts to scout around different regions looking for players who might be bot users based on observation of patterns, gathering of intel, and chatting with other miners who could give me a few clues just through seemingly innocent conversations. Once I found my suspects I would go ahead and gather my tools to destroy them without warning. My favorite tactic is by offering the suspect my assistance via a hauling alt. My hauling alt, unbeknownst to the suspect, is a warp-in for my other alt which is flying a Catalyst or Oracle depending on the strength of the target (ship scanners FTW). Then... boom, loot, scoot.
As for Market bots, oh those are just ******* annoying. This is why a large number of Eve players would love to see the ability to shoot someone's avatar in the face inside the stations one day. Even better if one day Dust mercs could break down the market bot's door in Jita and shoot holes into them while they sleep. |
