There really isnt...
That is why the SMG is a side arm and ARs are light weapons.

If you're a sniper, you can only carry a sniper, but not an assault rifle. If you'd rather use an automatic weapon instead of the pistol, the only other option is the submachine gun.
It's good for close range fighting, and also for when you have to reload in a firefight with no cover. I've seen heavies use it efficiently. |

At close enough range, with good aim at the head area, they'll fall. Militia is terrible against anything but militia though. |

You replace your scrambler pistol with an SMG for the same reason you replace your sniper rifle with an AR.
The SMG is also a bit more forgiving of up close spray and pray during those "oh crap I just turned the corner and ran into the guy" situations than an AR.
You might possibly get better performance from the SMG than the AR with an up close fit, but the shotgun's going to far outperform the SMG at those ranges.
All in all, it boils down to playstyle and fittings overhead (my logi fit started with an SMG in place of an AR, the AR wouldn't fit till after I put a couple levels into my fitting skills) |

With skill they can be just as good, in some situations, better than an AR.

I feel like it's not serving it's intended role vary well, I can see why one would want to take a short range automatic weapon but in it's current state scrambler are the superior side arm in nearly every situation you could come across. The high recoil and spread combined with what feels like assault rifle damage at no more than shotgun range make it just not a viable choice in my eyes. |

scrambler pistols are sidearms and one of the best guns in the game being a sidearm doesnt mean u have to have a terrible gun
smgs need a tighter spread imo kinda dumb how ARs have tighter hip fire spread |

ya this makes since, I think the main purpose of the smg and of a sidearm for that matter is to have something to switch to if the person just needs a small push to death. Sidearms are by no means suppose to be main weapons. So when someone is about to die and you run out of ammo then switch to the smg and finish him while he stupidly tries to reload.
Now I do admit that switching weapons sucks in this build compared to others, alot slower, it still is much faster then reloading a rifle. half a second compared to 3 seconds. |

Dont really know what else to say. went 17-3 with just a logi suit and a TT-3 assault scrambler pistol, and one of the deaths was because I ran out of ammo and nanohives. I'll admit that I had a bit of help from a dropship that flew me over good places to deploy in whenever I died, but still- I killed a lot of ARs with that pistol.
The real question is why anyone would use an SMG instead of a scrambler. |

This is why I asked for more in door objectives. It would make shotguns and SMG's viable. But given the fact that SMG's are sidearms you should use it as such. |

Tbh they could use a buff imo.
Not a huge one but a nudge upwards.
That plus giving assault rifles recoil would help balance the game a lot more. |

Smg have a slightly faster turn and run speed then ar, in old builds with a scout it was noticeable.
The Minmatar weapons like smg should have more recoil then the ar. The ar needs more, but not as much as smg. The Minmatar rifle should kick a lot. |
