Howdy CCP,
Will we ever see destructible environments in game? I hate to bring up BF3 but that was one thing they got right. You can actively target and bring down a whole buildings.
An example in Dust would be: Targeting the crates that people hide behind on bridges and in corners, destroying those to get at the meat.

As far as I know with the destructible enviroments it will be the playerbuilt(eve sided) buildings on the planet that will look or get destroyed when you take over a planet as a dust merc, now I am not entirely sure about this but I really like you idea, it doesn't have to be bf3 level, but being able to have some destructible enviroment would definately shift the burnzone. |

[Speculation On]
The game engine makes destructible environments expensive in terms of development time and performance. It would be possible for individual graphical elements (a box, a building, a wall segment) have their own hit points and when they took enough damage to have a "destruction animation" and be removed or replaced with their destroyed version. But that would mean each element would have to be tracked, created in multiple versions, and have new animations built.
There is only so much development time, computing time in the running program and graphic capability in the system to go around.
What would be lost if destructible environments were implemented in the current system (as opposed to, say, "son of PS3" in a year or two)? Putting processing time into destructible environments would cut down on (potentially) number of simultaneous players and/or control responsiveness. In terms of development resources, other things that use new art, modelling, rigging animation (like weapons, vehicles, armour) would need to be slowed down or eliminated.
I suspect CCP have decided to place a low priority on destructible environments in order to concentrate on basic capabilities.
BF3 style environments will have to wait until there is more capability in the underlying system and possibly a new (or modified) client / server environment.
tl:dr Not any time soon

APB had quite some destruction in it and it is a unreal engine game. It wasn't on PS3 though and UE3 consistently underperforms on this console. There's no way BF3 level destruction can be reached in this game and blowing up stuff will likely be limited to destroying player bought buildings and installations. I expect they won't be breaking apart piece by piece though, rather just blowing up all in one go. |

I wouldn't want it to be on BF3s scale where whole buildings were being obliterated and crashing down on people in it (was cool though).
I'm thinking of battlefield mechanics, ie. the destructible crates, walls etc. that people regularly use for defense. Small scale items, not whole installations or buildings on the map.
