Interesting story... but lets look a little closer...

Quote:2nd game last night, dropped in at the start of the fight, unusual enough in itself as I don't get much opportunity to put my speedy scout to it's best uses. So I sprint off and take two points, capping a supply depot and a few turrets on my way. Then I retire to a safe distance and prepare to watch one of the two points I've taken, Fair enough. Good approach. Start by taking objectives, and you're a sniper, so setting up at your preferred range is a good move. But now what?
Quote:a minute or two later and lil lonesome red dude comes to take my points over, he's using cover well and I have no clear shot. Red dude caps the point I'm watching and then retires to a hidey hole just around the corner waiting for the counter-cap team. So you're saying he sat on the objective, solo hacking it, and you'd "set up" in a position where you DIDN'T HAVE LINE OF SIGHT ON THE OBJECTIVE? This isn't the action of a good sniper. You need to find a better position if they can compete a hack without you having a line on them.
Quote:Stupid blue sees the point get capped and wanders over, completely oblivious to red dot waiting to pounce. And after the target has taken time to hide himself, you haven't repositioned to try and get a shot? Or at least MARK the target so your teammate knows the enemy's still in the area? Again, this is BAD sniper behaviour.
Quote:Mr Blue re-caps the point and steps away from the installation, at this point Mr Red decides it's do or die and emerges from his hidey hole to try and fill Mr Blue with hot plasma. Mr Blue nonchalantly strolls right across my line of fire right as I'm taking the shot, it must have passed within a few inches of his ear and neatly penetrates Mr Red, down in one, for a change. Mr Blue, still oblivious to the fact he just had a near death experience casually strolls off to find something else to do. But at least you took the shot and hit. If FF was on, though, would you have been confident enough to fire when there's a risk of hitting your teammate?
Want a REAL story for those who hate snipers? I've got plenty, from the perspective of someone on the ground relying on a sniper or two for fire support.
1. Enemy team has captured A and C on Manus Peak. Our team has a few people getting themselves spawn-camped at the MCC, and a few non-moronic players guarding B and trying to push for A. One of our teammates climbs up through the "safe" redzone and out beyond it to a high cliff/mountain perch where he has a good angle on A. He scopes in, so he can better spot enemies in the area, lighting the red dots up for the squad that's moving in on the position. For now, he holds fire, to avoid drawing attention to himself. When the friendlies move in, knowing the enemy position, and knowing that said enemies don't know THEIR position, they do so by spreading out, and hitting from multiple directions at once. As soon as the first shots are fired, the sniper joins in, picking off - or softening up - any targets that leave themselves exposed. What would have been a rout of the attackers without good intel has been turned into a victory thanks to a GOOD sniper.
2. I'm alone, behind enemy lines, with a good semi-ninja Shotgun Assault. I'm fragile, but hard to spot, and I manage to cram an Armour Repper on as well as a Profile Dampener. I've gone unnoticed getting behind enemy lines, but have had to expose myself to take out the enemy Forge Gunner so our HAV has a clear path. I've just spotted a guy with a Swarm Launcher, and am moving up behind him, when I see a flash of red on my minimap behind me. Before I have time to turn, the distinctive sound of a Sniper Rifle rings out, a kill is displayed, and the red dot vanishes. I'm now free to clear out that Swarm Guy, who things he's safe outside the sniper's line of sight. Without that sniper, he WOULD have been safe.
3. Moving down from B on Manus Peak, in another mission. I'm running a heavily shield-tanked Shotgun Assault, and I've seen (partly thanks to the Sniper) that there are several enemies moving towards us at the lower level behind the buildings. Seems like a good place for me to ambush them, so I get into position and wait. First enemy rounds the corner, and I one-shot the Assault suit. A Scout dashes out wide, too far for me to engage effectively. I switch to SMG - conveniently, this is the same weapon he's using, and I gun him down... but then... disaster. HMG fire. I'm up against a Heavy, with my Sidearm out. I rush for cover, and barely make it there without dying. I can't move out, because he's there and my shield's only started to regen, and I've got almost no armour left - although that's repairing too... slowly. I switch to my Shotgun and retreat, hoping I can lure the Heavy into chasing me around the building while I recover enough to fight back effectively. He turns the corner, and the first Sniper round slams into him. His shields are still down from my earlier SMG attack, so he loses a solid amount of armour from the shot. I quickly rush forward while the enemy's trying to figure out the sniper's position, and land SHotgun blast at point-blank, then another sniper round finishes him before he can return his attention to me.
THOSE are how good snipers work. Your story? Not so much. |

When sniping I try and support my team (re: Garretts recounting and more, more or less) but sometimes the team is turrible, just turrible, and no matter what I try and do it doesn't fix the idiotic and ridiculous... whatever it is they are doing. I'm not saying I can turn the tide of a battle on my own but I try and create opportunities rather than just doing... whatever it is they are doing. /rant
I absolutely will go all camper sniper if the other team is tank/ds spamming the field. Mainly because I don't have a build to counter. Yet. And stupidly enough I don't have it in me to quit out of a game just because I'm getting owned for whatever reason... I remember you pulling me out of a couple of tight spots, actually.
I think you were my the sniper in my 3rd story, actually.
You're also one of the few names I take seriously when I see a Sniper Rifle next to your name on the kill feed. |
