Can someone please tell me how on earth it's possible for a shotgun that has has 42hp damage take out a heavy with 166 HP shield and 779 HP Armour., IN ONE SHOT !!!

Shotguns shoot pellets.
That is 42hp PER PELLET.

Real reason is most likely each pellet or shot from the shotgun does 42 damage, if you figure 15-20 (im guessing) of those shots in each shotshell then if they are close the spread will be very small and you will be hit with all those shots then your looking at about 630-840 damage from one close shot.
Edit: or in this case plasma charges instead of shot. |

shotgun is still broke but you wont hear it until scouts have speed mod and proto shotguns just one shotting everything.
already see a few good shotgun scouts that basically 1 shot everything |

Shotguns are beastmode within 10 meters. Anything more than that and they are useless. It takes skill to manuver that close or entice your enemy within range. |

A minimally upgraded Militia Shotgun (like the one my HAV driver uses) is barely going to hit outside Nova Knife range, but beyond that, it was pretty blatantly not serious. |

interesting ive done some math and the shotgun must had 22~23 pellets when it was a bodyshot. Its more probably that it was a headshot. And meh your fault to let some 1 with a shotgun come so close to you. |

42hp x 12 pellets +50% dmg (3m mark for me) +10% dmg from weaponry +10% dmg from dmg mod... I come at 915 dmg, so it's a little bit short from 945 you gave, but it will be something like this. The main problem is I don't remember seeing pellet count on the weapon stats page, we could do better CCP.
I specced into assault when scout speed was nerfed, so now I assault shotgun. I'm not that fast, but twice as sneaky and win with scouts on the same shotty level (below k5, on k5+ it's who sees who first).
Yeah, nerf shotguns, those heavies with creodron ARs and 'broadside' HMGs are so poor and vulnerable when you get 3m from them. Poor, poor heavies. |

Cant help the spawn point, i was right next to the gunner, and for peoples info it was a body shot not head.

I've not looked at the maths behind this but where does the "+50% damage (3m mark ) come into it, never seen this written on the shotgun.
Also i cannot see where it says there are either 8 or 12 pellets used,

Look at your "efficiency" stat that pops up when you ADS on someone. When you're close enough, the Shotgun has more than 100% efficiency, meaning a damage bonus. |

H.D Shotgun2face distance gives 150% (so +50%), if you want to see something funny take scrambler pistol and aim it at the head from 2m... spoiler: it's 450%.
Pellet count is not listed in the properties tab of shotguns -- that was my point. IIRC we were told two builds ago that shotguns are based on pellet mechanics, but still no info on shotgun prop tab. CCP should fix this, because it's confusing and makes calculating the actual damage hard (and I need to double tap, which is time consuming ;). |

Supposedly these SG are not solid projectile - gun powder based. So they are silent. Hence a scout weapon. |
