Now IU just got out of a match where two things happened.
1) For some insane reason a tank drove up next to me, of the OPFOR kind, with no sound and not EVEN A BLIP on the ****** radar that we have. WTF CCP?!?!?!?!
2) I had a Heavy appear miraculously out of thin are, charge his forge gun and kill me; AGAIN WITHOUT HIM PINGING MY RADAR!!!!!
This doesn't even take into consideration that the terrain and every other F***ing player seems to clip into me and and hook me, making it impossible to move.
Bu that is not the point of this thread. OF all the things I hear and see posts about on the forum, this doesn't seem to be either a major concern for the players (WTF) or CCP (doubly WTF, WTF!!!!!)
Certain mechanics seem absolutely necessary to have DECENT play mechanics before you can begin to tweak balancing issues. The memory leaks and the resulting frame rate issues, the terrain problems, and the F***ing RADAR!
So, please, CCP get your priorities STRAIGHT and fix these basic play mechanics before anything else. Without addressing these you will continue to loose more and more players that are supposed to be actually testing this game we have before us. That is of course there is an internalized desire to thin out the player base and basically bring about personal failure. |

Kazeno.. calm down.
And look at any skils related to minimap radar (long range scaning, profile dampening, profile analysing, dropssuit command) |

Question:
Are these players coming up to you from the side (just beyond your peripheral view) and/or from behind? Or are they coming up from in front of you?
I have snuck up on assaults and snipers from the side and managed to kill them successfully because I stayed out of their peripheral view.
If any of them came from in front of you, it's probably because they utilized the terrain as cover as it helps mask the profile of their suits.
There is a work around, though. Use the active scanner. Fitted on infantry, you will be able to scan through walls in the direction you are looking at. Fitted on vehicles and you will be able to scan through with a 360 degree view. But you have to active it like an active module I believe.
Please keep in mind that the active scanner is only as good as its scan precision and how low an enemy merc's profile is.
EDIT:
As for the tank not making any noise, that sounds like an audio problem in the client. But other than that, a tank can get close to you without detection provided you didn't look in its general direction or if someone else didn't spot it for you.
The minimap is not even a radar. It's based on line of sight. If I see you, my teammates who are on the other side of the map will see your icon appear in the HUD because you are now visible in the TACNET (tactical network). But if I lose sight of you, you disappear. |

Eh, I get where the frustration is coming from. Really, I was very confused a few weeks back when one day all the reds just didn't appear on my maps. That or they would blink in and out around me. Once, too, a tank came from seemingly nowhere. I also did not have an audio cue that I typically hear near vehicles, or the flash of headlights as they scan the area. Nothing really but squish.
Having said that though, I do realize there are skills as mentioned above that players can and are using to dampen my ability to see them on my mini-map. Before, this was not much of an issue so it was unsettling at my first experience with it. Now that I realize these skills are being used, I can work around them as described above. In fact, today I was able to walk up to a secondary platform where a cluster of reds were camping. Their attention was to the platform across from them, with their backs to me, so I was able to lay a drop-uplink and kill three of them before they ever noticed me simply because the entire squad had their backs to the stairway. If fact, once they returned fire, killed me, and doubled-back into position, I was still able to spawn on my drop-uplink right behind them---again---and kill them all over again. Had just one of them bothered to look around and check their blind spots I would never have had a chance. The point, I guess, is to understand the mechanics at work and manipulate the environment to your favour. Lower your own profile and give them hell in turn.
As to the tank issue, I'm still not sure wtf happened there ;)
I'm not sure if this is related, but I have noticed supply depots popping up in the middle of areas of my map that I JUST walked through without any visual sign of them in front of me. Of course, turning around, there they are. Same with enemy drop-uplinks. I would destroy one, move forward, then as soon as I top a short hill a new drop uplink pops up on my map just behind me where I came from. There are no enemies around me that could have placed it that I can see, but there's the uplink exactly where I was 3 seconds earlier.
At times, I do believe "The Doctor" is having a bit of fun with us.....
*edit* Call-downs. Interesting. I just happen to be on the map view when I saw several supply depots and turrets drop from the sky, mid game, onto the map. I never realized this was in play. Very neat. |

What doesn't make any sense to me is the fact that in EVE, the scanning of the ships is NOT limited to line of sight, so to me it doesn't make any sense that that dropsuits would be much the same. If that is the case, then that particular approach to the mechanic is VERY broken.
Now in response to the skilling up in profile dampening (PD), dropsuit command (DSC), precision scanning (PS), and long range scanning (LRS), I am level 4 in DSC and level 2 in all the rest. And the suit it happened to had a precision scanning device and a profile dampener. SO I don't know what to say.
CCP should take the time to FULLY explain their INTENTIONS of how the mini map, profile scanning and dampening are really supposed to work. This would help alleviate the frustration and confusion of these gameplay mechanics.
EDIT: I would still like to know HOW THE F*** a tank sneaks up on you? The damn thing probably weigh 30-40 tons and are on tracks. You should feel them WAY before you see them. |

Even in a Scout suit, you're practically in a tank yourself. The shaking you're sending out should counter-balance most of the shaking the tanks sends out, and your suit's designed to negate any impact or shockwaves - that would logically reduce the sensation of the vibrations caused by the tank. |

One more hint for you
Scout suits 25m of scan range Rest suits 15m of scan range ------> first, closest to your marker, circle on minimap has 20m
Signatures on dropsuits are about (i'm not now in game so it is aprox) Heavy 65 Logi 55 Assault 55 Scout 45
Scan power Heavy 60 Logi 50 Assault 50 Scout 40
Rest of math with skils and modules you can do onself. Now you have full view what you can get. |

Few things, almost summing up the whole thread:
1: Different suits and vehicles have different scan ranges and sig radii. Your Scan Strength must be higher than the Sig Radius to pick it up (I think. I could be wrong there) you can reduce the Sig Radius of your vehicles or suits by fitting signal dampeners. These also work on vehicles.
2: If the vehicle\suit has enough dampeners to remain hidden, it will not show on the map until someone is looking at it. If no one is looking, it won't show up even when it hits you.
3: If you're having major issues, consider learning and training the passive skills that boost your scan range. This not only benefits you, but your whole team too. |

Because ships have sensors in a bubble. The smallest frigate is the size of a 747 roughly for one thing. The second is there really is no terrain in space that could mask the signal your average ship puts out. The power plant alone in a frigate is the size of a tank and gives out wattage that makes a modern nuclear reactor look like a kids toy. |

You are not the only one who is upset by the detection system, OP. I think it's pretty ridiculous that a tank can literally hide behind a bush and sneak up on you. Unless you have a Black OPS variant, I should be able to hear a tank coming around the corner, an LAV driving behind me, and a dropship overhead.
Our radar system should not be limited by just line of site. We need to take sound into effect as well. |
