The problem is that randoms are always going to play like randoms. A common voice channel would help a little if there was a natural leader who could gather up the troops and those troops were at all inclined, but it is no guarantee. The sheer chaos on a full team channel would likely render it useless, especially if there were arguments over what to do along with the usual music, barking dogs, and side conversations on top of it. Now think 32 or 64 people on one channel.
CCP has designed DUST for deep team play with stratagey and tactics being an important element, but the vast majority of matches are composed of randoms who are either not inclined to teamwork, or simply incapable. It's just not going to play the way it was designed. Corp battles is what DUST is meant for and how it plays best. Blueberries and Brownian motion does not equal objective play. There are pockets of organization where a corp squad is, but it doesn't ever get beyond that unless two squads from the same corp manage to get in on the same side. Then they typically roll the other side.
I'm not sure how CCP can force organization in public matches. These players haven't been drafted and they don't have to listen to an officer. I'd love to see it happen, but the only mechanism I see for organization and teamwork is called a corporation. CCP supports that (well, except for only letting a squad of four into any public match), but they can't force blueberries to join one.
DUST is being balanced on public matches where solo play is the norm. Vehicles are typically OP in public matches due to the lack of a coordinated response, and they are UP in corp matches where coordination is the norm. They are being balanced for public matches which is fine for the normal play of the game, but that's going to hurt the end goal of large corp battles. I don't know the answer to the problem. It could be to just buff the up and ban them from hi-sec matches. You'd have to add a full field simulator for practice to give pilots a chance to gain player skill, but it could be done. Then every player would have to start out as infantry and build a solid ground game before dropping points into vehicles since they couldn't use vehicles to gain ISK or SP. |
