The next generation PlayStation has reportedly been code-named GÇ£Orbis,GÇ¥ and it will feature an anti-used game system and offer no backward compatibility with PlayStation 3 games, Kotaku reported on Wednesday. According to multiple unnamed sources, Orbis will have some kind of measure built into the console that will prevent it from playing used games. Users will be able to buy new games for the system on Blu-ray disc or as a PlayStation Network download, and if a user chooses to buy a disc, it will supposedly be locked to a single PSN account. Users will reportedly be required to log into SonyGÇÖs network to play games, with no offline mode available. Read on for more.
If a user does trade in a disc, the pre-owned customer will be limited in what they can do in the game, and may be forced to pay a fee to unlock and register the full title. Earlier reports claimed that MicrosoftGÇÖs next generation Xbox could include a similar feature, however GameStop CEO Paul Raines said a used game block would be highly unlikely.
Similar to how Sony removed the PS3 SlimGÇÖs backwards compatibility with PS2 games, the company reportedly has no plans to offer backward compatibility with PS3 games on its Orbis console. The next-generation PlayStation is seemingly slated to launch during the holiday season next year, and it will feature an AMD x64 CPU and AMD Southern Islands GPU capable of running Orbis games at a resolution of 4,096 x 2,160 pixels, or at 1080p in 3D mode.

there is a reason they are un named sources... it is not out, and certain details are still private and not meant to be out.. the source could be breaching some type of contract they have with sony... so that is why you have unknown sources.. not because they some grease stained shirt guy behind the pizza shop.
And not being able to use full content of used game.. that's a big big thing you do not want released early if it is true.
And personally , if I was a game or software developer for sony and became that because of my love for games.. then found out they wanted to do something like this.. I would spill the beans too |

As greedy as game console companies like to be, this method of forcing players to use only new games instead of used ones will not fly at all with the majority of the consumer base. They will simply stick to their current hardware and not buy the new console. |

this is a problem because if xbox do go that way(can't play second hand games) then it would be stupid for sony to do it too. Sony will get a lot of xbox players to their console if they leave it as it is. |

EWWWWWWWWWWWWWW No Ps3 support or used game support?! EWWWWWWWWWWWW NO I am not paying to just play my games through my console xD sorry... no thats not ok,
Even though this is unnamed support, Sony is going to lose a TON of customers. USED games are what drives the game market and makes people play more games. Letting people borrow your DISC lets other people PREVIEW the game before buying it.
OH MAN You got the NEW such and such can I try it. BOOOM there you go previewing the game. This is going to KILL sonys market and im pretty sure that there going to trash this when they do the math and realize who there gonna lose xD |

i seriously doubt any console retailer decides to lock Games to one system only. As much as they'd like to kill the occasion market or second market, borrowing a game from a friend is a common practice. As much as going at some friends place with a game just to show it off.
How unpopular could this be ? probably too much. |

I semi agree with this, game stop would naturally complain as it's a large revenue creator for them.
but even though we have Internet pretty much in every home, being forced to be connected isn't something we appreciate, blizzard already do this, and I hate them for it.
I think it's more of a change to consumer thought. It's not as bad as we think, it's definitely beneficial for the company, but as consumers we see more problems than benefits.
I'm still on the ropes about it |

What will likely take place is that you will get a code with a new game purchase, which instead of granting online access (like we have now with online passes) it will activate the game itself and lock that code to your console/PSN account.
You will likely still be able to buy used games, but will have to pay an extra fee to get an unlock code for it.
Pretty lame, not sure if I will move on past the PS3 or not, as all the DRM infected stuff nowadays, that Sony just loves doing, is getting beyond ridiculous. I bet the Orbis won't be able to play burned DVD's or CD's, and any mp3 you try to import will require some kind of authentication that it is not pirated.
I will say, however, this new PlayStation platform will fit in perfectly with the current administration in the US. |

Btw, were the rumors about PS3s intentionally being made to only last a few years true? Serious question that may hint to the validity of this rumor. |

This will unaffect Dust 514.
I also fail to see how this is any different to the PC's most popular download and game service. While it has very good special sales prices, console games start seeing price drops as soon as 2-4 weeks after a game is first launched. |

Pure speculation bro. They said ps3 was going to have 'games locked to console' and it never happened. Creating a console that doesn't play used games will kill the gaming industry, not to mention gamestop, eb games, redbox, gamestation (uk), eBay, gamefly.com, and the hundreds of other stores and online sites who deal with used games and game rental Not going to happen, never will happen.......so don't worry. |

My Nintendo GameCube isn't backwards compatible either, I still play my N64 games.
Just hold onto the game system and there's no problem.
And I don't really think that there's a way to keep discs from working on a system since the data is stored on the actual machine and not the disc, unlike cartridges. Unless they implemented something like CD-keys, which have been in use for a damn long time anyway, then there shouldn't be a problem.
I also don't trust used games anyway. It's a holdover from my N64 days. |

Unless they pull off a miracle of engineering and, somehow, figure out how to emulate the Cell, it shouldn't be a surprise there will be no backwards compatibility. Or, they put a PS3 into the next system. Who knows how cost effective that is, though? Make the system bigger than it needed to be.
If it is using AMD chips then there is no reason to think there will be backwards compatibility. But, 4k resolution? Eh. Maybe upscaling. At most. |
