I have no idea if the book holds monetary value, but it does hold a historical and possibly personal value to many. I stumbled upon this old book in my grandfathers house after he passed away last year, It was with a bunch of other books and had a name written on the 3rd leaf inside before the preface but didn't read much into the name as I figured It was just some regular guys name and adress or something, I found it quite interesting but didn't really bring it back off the shelf once I got it home. It is called Morals and Dogma of the Ancient & Accepted Scottish Rite of FreeMasonry prepared for the Supreme Council of The Thirty-Third Degree for the Southern Jurisdiction of the United States, And published by it's Authority. When I pulled it out to do some light reading yesterday, I took a look at the original 33d grand commanders picture inside the cover and noticed a few symbols by his name, and it dawned on me.. those symbols were around the name signed in the book. Now no, it is not signed by Albert Pike.
However it is signed

John Henry Cowles was a very influential person in masonry for over 50 years and was one of the longest running grand commanders. Was an honorary grand commander for lodges all over the world.

I believe this was his own personal book, and am glad to have found it.

It is his signature! However there is not enough proof that it belonged to him personally. It may have been given to an apprentice by him , which could have been my great grandfather or it was owned by him. I have not seen anything else that could place my family in masonry , so I still believe it was owned personally by John Cowles. Either way, i am glad to be the owner of it. There is much wisdom in this book. A lot of people give masons crap, and think they plot to take over the world or something. This book is sometimes hard to understand, but from all I can get out of it so far, they are all about the well being of humanity and not in it for their own personal gains. I have only read about 80 pages of it's almost 1,000 pages and it already has me seeing alot of things differently. |

I considered becoming a mason, when i looked into it it sounded neat, but after looking into it more it started to sound batshit crazy like the whole reenacting mason related historical events and stuff, plus I have an important personal standard of never lying and to join i'd have to say I believe in a supreme being. |

No offense but the masses are too dim witted to even know about Masons in some cases, I'm not one I just like to know a.little about a lot of things. |

I only knew a little bit about them from small bits of history lessons in school ( that really didn't go into detail on how they operate ) and then segments here and there on the history channel. Have been finding out a lot more about them lately, right now I am trying to learn more about symbolism for them. They use quite a few symbols that have a lot of deep meaning to them. |

My cousins husband is a FreeMason. He once told me(paraphrasing slightly) "Masons are not a secret society, they're a society of secrets." which may be why so little is known about their internal practices. |

the grand lodge in london. the craftsmaship is amazing. search about a bit on the web :) i've seen pictures of buckingham palace and the grand lodge is quite something.

This has also sparked my interest in Masonry and I plan on learning everything I can without joining them ( not to say that I wouldn't) |

The truth is Mason believe in balance. A Grand Architect. Balance to them is Light and Dark, positive and negative. Perfect cornerstones and foundations is what put the universe into motion.
They do things like care, and help, and promote a pure world in the light. But in the darkness within the lodge...The reenacting isn't reenacting it is Ritual, and that concerns a rich amount of symbolism. You might think it is crazy but Ritual is part Theater, part Poetry, part Magic...
For instance, indigenous people from all over the world will reenact a successful hunt as a ritual before a great hunt. They do this to achieve success in the current undertaking...
Also, when certain electronics are arrayed in Magical shapes, they will produce effects that increase their potential(Memory Space, CPU speed, etc)...I didn't use to believe any of the craziness most crazies spout, but when you research what the crazies believe, it is really crazy. 
There a reasons you crave certain perishable things...Advertising was but one cornerstone for them in the Economic structure they built...
Now I ramble...And my research is bleeding into sleep-depravity and pouring onto the screen...Damn you, server down-times.....But alas, it is as the masons believe. Balance will lead to perfection one day...
