@OP: At the end of the post, you may want to condense your stories into bullet-point tips, it helps send the message to the shorter attention spans. Trust a guy who's done a few LONG posts before. Other than that, a very informative thread that will help individual soldiers. However, there wasn't very much to squad-level tactics, which will be a bigger deal when we get to lay down our own installations. I remember using the old starter-corp forums (when there were only 4 or so NPC corps, and no player ones) to post a "toolkit" of squad maneuver types - very basic, but that's because they are tools to build efficient strategies. Here's a couple that I remember - or gave myself permission to post.
The Higher Ground: It is always much easier to defend an elevated fortification, as you have more visibility and the enemy has to climb up to reach you. Installations should be placed on top of hills and cliffs whenever possible.
The Flank: The most basic strategic maneuver, you simply go around the enemy to shoot them in their more-vulnerable back and sides, after which you have basically won the fight. Good commanders will spend most of their time figuring out How they are going to perform The Flank in a given situation, often using other tools to set it up. Not so simple now, right?
The Retreat: Sometimes, you have to pull back to go forward. In DUST, the Retreat will likely consist of a given tank column falling back to a spawn to regroup. When you have been successfully Flanked, you will need to find a way out, then Retreat to survive. |

But the reason our posts exist here is to help prevent that type of thought among those who don't have infinite resources. My definition of strategy in DUST 514: the way a commander wins the same 1,000,000,000 ISK-100 man fight using only 1,000,000 ISK and a single 6-man squad. Any leader who can do that is the modern Sun Tzu in my book. |
