I personally like to maximize my total HP instead of increasing weapon damage. I use shield extenders. armor plates, and armor repairers. Assaults are the easiest class to get used to. Advanced and Prototype suits rival their Logistic counterparts. Depending on you fitting, an assault dropsuit can achieve the total HP of a heavy suit. I currently have 650 EHP with room for a little more growth. You have the benefit of having a primary and secondary weapon, which is crucial for long-term survival on the front lines. I can't count how many times my SMG has cut down my foe while we were both reloading our primary weapons. As for equipment, there are two routes I've considered - mainly because I've seen them in game. Assaults either use nanohives or nanite injectors. I personally suggest nanite injectors unless you know that you'll be working with a team. Not only are nantie injectors less CPU/PG intensive than nanohives, but they net you far more SP in the long run. I think that using nanite injectors will help new players gain SP a little faster. Nanohives are more 'lone wolf' equipment. When you bring a nanohive, you're bringing it for yourself in case you run out of ammo too far away from a supply depot. But that assumes that you will be running and gunning so much that you will burn through your clips in the first place. I also strongly recommend equipping AV grenades to your assault fits. The power and accuracy (Still hotly debated) of the assault rifle has seen me through many gunfights. They are absolutely useless on the LAV's that run me over though. Basic AV grenades can make short work of those using militia LAV's to get some quick kills. This is but a piece of what makes up the Assault class. I'm also not the best assault player in the game, so i can only talk from experience. But if you ever have questions or just wanna play together, don't hesitate.
