The Short Distance Personnel Transport, nicknamed the Shotput by the troops, is a single use vehicle deigned to move a squad of four mercenaries up to 500 meters across the battlefield. Once a mercenaries are trained in Shotput use they can call in the platform and it is deployed, rather like a dropsuit, into the battlefield.
To use the Shotput up to four troops attach to it and then the owner targets a spot within 500 meters and activates it. A single use thruster in the base of the transport fires, blasting it and the troopers on it in a ballistic arc ending at the target location. With more training, the mercenary piloting the device becomes more accurate in choosing a landing site, reducing the risk of a crash or landing in the wrong location.
A Shotput is most accurate when loaded with four troopers. With fewer, the imbalance of it's loading makes it harder to control. Single mercenaries can use it, but even with a lot of training they are taking a big risk of crashing or ending up someplace other than they have targeted. |

I don't like it. Gives less of a reason to have Dropships. |

I don't like it as a practical or sensible idea, but it sounds like it would make for some hilarious moments.
Make it unreliable enough that players won't actually take it seriously. Like so...
Standard: 70% chance of going off-course, 50% chance of crashing. Advanced: 60% chance of going off-course, 35% chance of crashing. Prototype: 50% chance of going off-course, 20% chance of crashing.
Obviously, these would be the failure chances assuming a full load on the vehicle. You could have two skills to increase accuracy, one with 3% reduction in off-course chance per level, and one with a 10% reduction in scatter range per level. Assuming maxed-out skills with the "vehicle" AND a Prototype model, you'd still be seeing 35% chance of missing the target. And one chance in five that you'll die even without accounting for the enemy interfering. |

The mercs would "lock in" to the rack and the explosive would go off tossing them up like the lid of a trashcan bomb. But I could go with the "Shot out of a cannon" image too

In the amount of time it would take to deploy, embarque, target and launch I could run that distance. |
