the idea of PVE was ill received early in the beta but it seems that a good portion of the trolling children have run to HALO 4 or some such equivalent-inadequate drivel. so now this idea is once again starting to be something other then taboo.
to make worth while PVE in a persistent FPS MMO you need an Evolving content hook. simplified this means that to progress you need to have better gear to challenge bigger and meaner enemies. with out scaling difficulty and measurable advancement in gear PVE is not worth the time investment. IE with out a content hook it is in all senses a pointless waste of time. if some such system was giver time to grow and implemented properly it would serve to truly make this game unique.
the ideal in my mind is one where every 3 to 6 months you get a new set of 5 to 20 man raid encounters that could range from NPC Faction supported psudo PVP storming of beach heads, to sansha hoards, or drone hive raids. the "loot" would come in the form of tiered limited run BPC's that are direct but minor (2 or 3% per tier) upgrades of current gear. that is to say every thing in the game on day one is t1 every thing after the first content expansion would be t2 and so on. a system like this would also allow for the distribution of rare skill books and fuel a player market.
this adds a whole new level to what could be done with Dust's meta game. not only would you be boots on the ground for EVE corps, but you could also be adventurers or men of fortune risking the highest quality of gear for a slim chance of survival in a face off with the biggest, meanest, beings or constructs of death that thousands of worlds have to offer. because lets face it if its easy or boring it just becomes a grind... and who among us wants that?
this leads me to my next point, everything that is obtained from PVE could be used in PVP but with higher tiered gear comes inflated prices due to availability and time invested in its creation. like current gear it is destroyed with your clone. failure would be expensive, if that's not incentive for PVE success and a dissuading factor for PVP abuse i'm not sure what would be. but the option would be available and that's the whole point.
it may seem an arbitrary and silly idea in text form but if CCP were to do this, and do it correctly. it would give this game a insurmountable leg up on its competitors, plus a large stable community... which boils down to the fact they would be making Blizzard levels of money and giving us a legendary genera redefining experience. |
