Hey guys, so I wanted to make this post because scanning seems to be a less common subject on these forums and I wanted to share my experiences with it so far, as well as hear what anyone else has to say on it.
So far my current scanning skills are: lvl 3 profile analysis, lvl 3 long range scanning, and lvl 3 sensor upgrade. I am also using the advanced active scanner, the advanced profile analysis enhancer module, and 2 militia scanning range modules as well for my scanning scout dropsuit fit.
With this fit as well as others not so scanning focused I seemed to noticed a "trend" in what seems to be the games current scanning mechanics. In some games everything works great. In a recent game I was actually picking up a heavy suit as far out as just shy that middle ring on the radar, PASSIVELY. Using the active scanner worked even better. In what seems like the majority of the games I've been playing however I literally pick up nothing at all, period, including trying to use the active scanner. I have been testing this for the past couple days now and depending on the game I'm in the system either works great or it doesn't work at all.
I've done some searches on these forums for information the past week or so trying to make sure I'm not missing anything but never found too much info and didn't see anything regarding what I've written here. To be honest I didn't look too hard so sorry if this is already common knowledge, I've only been playing this build for a little over a week. Since scanning seems to be a less popular skill set I figured it would hurt to share the info either way.
If anyone has any input or has any questions about scanning please add to the thread. |

it is a brand new gizmo added in recently, not too many ppl have probably used it. i, for one, am not nearly as skilled as you are in it and not getting too much as far as results. but from what ive heard playing around with my friends its something that needs to be looked into and tweaked.

The thing I have experienced is that it seems to work best in the small installation maps. I've had it work on the larger ambush maps, but it seems to be better on the installation ones. I've literally got the basic scanning skills. I think long range lvl 2 and not sure about the others. I've been using pretty much the same setup as you, but with the basic active scanner.
I decided the other night to test it out a bit. I've done it a bit before, but it seemed to work when it wanted to tbh so I've not really bothered that much or putting more skills into it. Since I'd hit the sp cap I figured I'd test it some more.
One thing I noticed that was really strange was that I was in a match with 3 squad mates against another squad in the early hours. The game put us up against each other on three maps and because it was late nobody else was in the match. In the first two matches it worked great picking up all four guys whenever they were in the inner ring on the mini map. However, in the the third map it just refused to work.
Now bare in mind it was the same 4 guys in 3 different matches.
The first map was Ashland and it worked fine. The second was on line harvest and so was the third, but it was using a different mood and the scanner refused to work. The strange part is that on the exact same map, with the exact same guys the scanner was failing. The only difference was the mood.
Now with this in mind I asked my squad mates if atmospherics were maybe at play. The reason I asked is because the mood was a really dark one with fog and various other eerie effects going on. I can't think of any other reason why the scanner was working on all 4 guys previously, yet when we went on to the third map I couldn't pick up any of them. It was really odd and I couldn't explain it. |

We pretty much need to do a controlled experiment. Get two opposing groups of different players. Some with scanning skills at level one or two, others will scanning skills at level four or five.
The opposing group needs dampening skills, to see how they work also. Some players with no dampening, some with level one or two, others with level four or five.
This way we can figure out how well scanning works against those w/o dampening, and those with certain levels of dampening. |

I tend to agree, but unfortunately there is no way to do this. I also wanted this option added to practice with my corp.
It does seem strange that in a beta test of a game there's no way to do controlled testing and we're simply left to guess. |

Interesting info guys. Scanning is sitting right at the top of my 'to do' list right now, already have some of the skills trained up.
My question is what about the vehicle modules? Is the behavior the same?
I've been in a match or two where i'm pretty sure LAVs had scanner modules on them, given how quickly they were able to find me. |

its not hard for CCP to throw up a controlled group server for the sheer purpose of just testing new gadgets and gizmos as well as other things of the sort. they could easily open up a room, post a thread in the announcement section, tell you were and how to apply for this, and grant you access to that room. not hard to do at all and could be also an easier way to balance weapons and other things ppl QQ of the sort. |

Better to ask CCP to make some instrucion videos eg. 'how to use .... module/weapon" in vintage/propaganda style.
They got all for this (include great amount of humor) and this give more tactics information then self-discovering all again.
So kids .. DONT PLAY TANKS AT HOME ;)

For the vehicle modules, I've yet to even make them work unfortunately. They do give off a pretty cool scanning sphere however whilst it's active. If you think a vehicle is running this module, you'll be able to see it giving off a bluey bubble type thing.
I think that as mentioned earlier once your passive skills are up a certain way and if the guy your scanning has low dropsuit command or a heavy suit, they'll flash when they come into the inner sphere on the radar. I've had this happen a few times now but had put it down to the scanner, yet I've had it happen whilst not even running the thing.
So who knows lol, I'd love to know how it works properly.
I also used to think that the scanner works in a cone in the direction your facing, I've later discovered that it's definately a radial scan as I've found people behind me.

You should do it with corpmates or set a date to do it. We will need a new channel for this as well so that we can sync into games and still talk to each other when we're on opposing sides to see how well it works.
I'd be down for it as I am interested in this as well. |

I've always wondered if there was some kind of deciding factor for scanning to work or not. Never actually considered it to be dependent on the map "mood" as you put it. Definitely something I'm going to try to keep track of in future games.

That would be amazing!! wouldn't hold my breath though.

Definitely not a bad idea ill go ahead and make the channel 'Scanning.' If a decent number of people join we can try to coordinate something further from there. |

Idk,it seems like if/when it get's fixed,is there anyone that really wants to waste precious SP and an equipment slot on something that has limited benefits? |

When the scanning does work (which seems to be dependent on the current game you are in) The active scanner lets you see the enemy team locations on your radar well out side your suits passive radars range. This is not only a huge benefit for you but for your team as well. not only do you see their locations you also see the directions they're facing. Utilizing all of these benefits to your advantage you can decimate the opposite team.
think about it this way; suppose you're playing an RTS and your opponent has fog of war enable but you can see everything he is building and when hes about to attack you. You would have a massive advantage. This is essentially what the active scanner and scanning skills are suppose to supply for you, though not as drastic as the said example.
