I'm sure several of the points I'm about to make have been talked about at various stage but just reiterating with my own thoughts and refreshing the thought process.
I would like dropships or maybe a variant of a high end ship to have a co-pilot seat. This of course may mean the dropship graphics would need adjusted a bit to allow 2 front seats and mechanics behind it I'm sure will be complex.
The first to enter would be the pilot, second co-pilot, gunner, etc. The pilot is the only one that can control the ship unless the pilot jumps out and thus the copilot automatically becomes the pilot.
What would the role of the co-pilot be? Role possibility could include:
- Access to activating any boosters or modules equipped on the ds. As most pilots will tell you, activating boosters during a fire fight while trying to fly is a pretty hard task to do with the current wheel mechanics. I would find this to be a major asset.
- Control a front gun on the dropship, aka meaning the 3rd slot on the ship would become a front gun. Limit it to blasters only (or maybe a new branch of guns if need be) and the current pg/cpu requirements would already make it hard to equip a front gun without giving up some power in other parts of the ship. I'm guessing this is merging into gunship realm but we don't have those yet so we will wait and see.
- Allow co-pilot to assign seats on the ship, aka reassign gunners. Ever get annoyed at a gunner that doesn't know what they are doing but you have a squad mate waiting for the seat? sadly the only way to get the spot open is to try to get close to someone with a sniper or AR on ground and have them do it for you.
Others ideas that could expand upon co-pilots
- Co-pilots skills could stack to make ships stronger
- Co-pilots could have access to specialized modules that only they can activate when equipped to a ship. Flares? Stability controls? Air Mines? etc.
I believe a co-pilot is the next logical expansion to a dropship that both expands its function and enhances team work. What roles and function they could have is up in the air but does allow for more variety and team work. Plus right now squads are 4 people and only 3 people can do something in a ship right now |

Hmmm, interesting idea.
I'd say either limit the 3rd turret to gunships. OR Remove the side turrets from dropships and replace them with the front turret, leaving side turrets for gunships.
Personally I prefer the latter as it makes the dropship more of a personnel carrier, and gives the gunship a more defined role.
Also remodelling won't be necessary if the pilot and co-pilot sit in tandem (attack helicopter style). |

It sounds like you are describing a fighter or gunship that has a pilot and a weapons officer. |

Regardless of the type of ship, co-pilots should be in all branches. Some of the options clearly extend into other fields they have not introduced yet but co-pilots on ds could have some enhancing effects. |

A commander seat in tank would also be nice to do same things as co-pilot, or perhaps give the owner the option of designating forth seat commander or main gunner.
The seat for co-pilot in dropships could be one of the rear passenger seats by adding console inside ship. Gunships/attack ships should have pilot controlled forward firing guns and a co-pilot controlled chin turret. The UH-1 in Vietnam was modified to gunship by replacing it's troop capacity with forward firing guns and/or rockets, both versions had door guns.
So, the pilot should control any fixed forward weapons(aiming requires turning ship), co-pilot/eo any chin turret, passenger/door gunners any side firing weapons. |

What about money and abillities, the pilot gets to be pilot because he/she/it payed for the dropship. |

Pilot has option to lock-out functions? This would be nice along with much asked for lock the doors ability. |

I quite like the idea of this tbh.
To have someone in a tank or DS purely keeping an eye out for threats and such. I'd still like to see a full tank/dropship crew with co pilots, spotters and people manning all of the guns. At least that way I can just get on with the driving. |

The co-pilot could deploy the blue dots that are camping in the dropship at the press of a button instead of the pilot making flying much easier for the pilot |

Make it optional. And copilot can just be tagged as one of the seats, no need for art change. |

1st. Fix swarm tracking, dropships haven't changed since the last build, where they were far from OP. Swarm tracking has, and is now even worse than before. Fix the tracking and speed and suddenly dropships are no longer WMDs.
2nd. For the love of god fix the eff-ing missile turrets already, OP as hell compared to all the others.
3rd. Once gunships are out, reduce the dropships fire power, either by giving it a <1 damage multiplier or reducing it to one front turret. |

This is not a thread about balancing. DS should definitely have guns but should not be able to deal as much damage at long range and it should really be able to take more of a beating. |

great idea. I always have somebody switch to the pilot seat when I need to do something mid flight anyway. |

As a pilot in self financed training, a co-pilot position would be good.
I enjoy being part of the team and on the ground one of my favorite roles is gunner on a HAV. I have enjoyed gunning on a DS. A little less with the current missile turrets. But I have learned a lot from watching how a good Tank Driver operates while gunning. Same would be true as a co-pilot.
Without a training facility piloting is expensive, violent and brief. Having my pilot take second seat when I fly would reduce some stress too. Most of the mods are active and just trying to fly the silly brick is hard enough. Now I am supposed to fumble finger my way through how many options to get to what I want only to have lag decide, no you really wanted email. Which happens when my other character is just trying to toss his last grenade and get out of harms way. Wow, so that is who is on both teams. Great information, but not now! |

Why not just hold out for a 2-person gunship as far as the weapon thing is concerned. I'm sure such an aircraft would require a dedicated gunner for its turret, should it be equipped with one. |
