Dust is very likely to succeed and surpass current FPS' There are stupid dust players, and there are smart ones. Hardcore players will be the ones your alliance will be contracting. casuals stay in high sec.
The competition amongst shooter games is on a whole different level from space point-and-click games. It all comes down to experience for the developers in my eyes, since it gives them the ability to actually program a game that works...
Say it's still a beta all you want, but framerate drops and lag is going to be an issue that will drive people away and they will NOT come back. They'll go back to their preferred game and by the time they should be thinking about returning to Dust, there's a dozen other shooters out there for them to try.
My above statement is mostly a warning for CCP to start focusing on the core mechanics of the game, the simple little things that makes playing enjoyable, like easy access to functions, no framerate drop in the middle of a firefight, all those tiny bits combine to make up a HUGE deal.
The second thing are game modes and MORE fun things to do in the game, which I feel should be CCPs second priority after working out the wrinkles. There are enough guns and dropsuits out there to keep people happy for the foreseeable future.
These are my reasons to disagree with your statement that Dust is likely to suceed and surpass other shooters. It's not gonna happen. It was gonna be a niche game whichever way you turn it, now it looks to be a niche game with a low player count.
It's not all doom and gloom for me. I haven't played EVE, but I see from their history that they listen to fans and improve on their game, not just talk about it. Add that to the fact that CCP stated Dust is in it for the long run (ie: playstation 4) then I see a light in the distance.
If Dust can keep enough players until the PS4 version launches, then I think CCP will have refined their game, learned and developed their shooter development skills and will get the hardware to put some of their more fancy ideas into action. A win-win situation for the hardcore players who stuck with Dust since it means more noobs to farm, a more active universe and a kickass metagame.
