Dat hit detection...

Ha, there were lag spikes. But back then we called the lag spikes "stairs".
But all in all the tempo is a lot more lively and yes, I liked the movement speed in replication.
But where were the scouts with swarm launchers firing at feet? |

Even with all of the bugs of the older builds, the OP swarm launchers, bad hit detection, the classes MEANT something. Scout was paper thin comparatively but moved so quickly it made it strong. Heavy was an absolute beast but you could out-flank their max turn speed so it was balanced.
Scout and heavy have been nerfed down to be nothing more than slightly modified extremes of the assault class, more HP and slow or less HP and slightly faster. Neither of which seems worth playing anymore unless you really want to use an HMG/forge.
By the time release comes around, they will have removed every unique characteristic of this game that really made it worth playing over the big name FPS games. The difference is this game doesn't have the production budget of the others or years of work adding to previous successful games. No offense to the developers or discredit to their hard work. Whoever is steering the production has given far too much weight to the complaints of the prevailing vocal minority of each build.
Hopefully they roll classes back to the way they used to be so this isn't just a Battlefield clone.
I would say that the suits all had a more unique personality. This is meant to be a game where "classes" are meaningless. In the sense that you can make what you want of the tools at hand.
But I do agree that all of the different suit types now feel more generic, or lifeless, somehow, Except the Logi suit/ class which is now much better.
Heavy is a lot closer to where it was in the old build relative to the other suits, but it does seem like everything else has gotten over worked and muddied to bring it all back to something close to what it used to be and that a lot of the life has gone out of the game.
But I really think it was a lot worse than we remember it. Maybe the thing to do would be to have a Replication weekend where CCP load us up with an exact copy of that build and we can watch 100 vehicles pile up as the RDVs keep em coming, or go back to play 2 matches, turn off PS3. Play a match, get crushed 7 times by a dropship. And do a refresher comparison.
I do agree that in trying to please all of us it may be that the vision of what the game is meant to be has gotten obscured. |

A lot of stuff that is in the most recent build is stuff that we asked for. We are as much to blame as anyone. CCP really did add in a little something that each camp asked for but as so often happens... well, it's kind of like when half the kids want Chinese and half the kids want Pizza and the third half want Hamburgers and the wife is a vegetarian so you make veggie lo mien pepperoni pizza burgers for dinner and no one is happy. Unless they're really high. Which would be badGǪ very bad.
A couple more things I do not miss from that build:
Aim assist.*
Trying to put together a drop suit load out with the fitting wheel. It never seemed to work and would often just completely lag out and become totally useless.
I sort of miss the old heavy heavy....
I don't miss the forums. But why would I? They haven't really changed. Though there are fewer posts about MAG on a daily basis.
So I decided to go through and try to find some old forum posts from replication but found this gem, relevant to E3 build, instead...
"...
I find the QQ coming from some of the top MAG players concerning the heavy suits personally embarrassing, though typical of the "get rid of stuff that kills me" bullshit that kill MAG dead 3 months in."
*Edit: Though I should add that aim assist was more noticeable in E3. And then ... problem solved. |
