Part of the issue is balance, some of it may be system related, and the majority of it is that moment of "Wait, what? I've never seen that before..." which is why they have us helping narrow this stuff down so that they can find one line of code in a gospel of gaming engine that is throwing off what's expected from what's happening.
- "All of the DOOOMED dooooomed DOOOOOOOOMED nonsense"
Probably doesn't help with how the developers feel about their awesome job. I'm sure a lot of them see the forums and are screaming on the inside when they see threads about what you want them to do (both good and bad).
- "There's more than 1 'development team' working on the game."
If you've ever read any of the weekly bug reportouts you know this. We've got a QA team that tests and reproduces the issues we're reporting so that they can find the problem, a design team that works on balance and rewards and stuff, a level design team that (shock gasp) designs and fixes the levels, and I imagine we have several other teams beyond that. They all work in their own areas and when you have dedicated allocation of resources like that it becomes counterproductive to try to divert members of one team to assist another at a certain point. That's why the level design team keeps giving us maps while the QA team tells them what's wrong with them so that they can fix it.
- "Our developers deserve to give themselves a little win while they're coding larger items for us."
Just because there are larger problems that need to be sorted out doesn't mean they can't break the monotony of coding with a quick project that will get them results right away. It's a common tactic in software development that helps your development team stay motivated and on task for much larger, more code intensive, projects.
I don't know who in Level Design made the 5 objective construction yard map -- but I want to let you know it's kittening awesome and I hope you guys can get all of the bugs on it squashed soon so that everyone else can see how awesome it is too. |
