I posted this in General Discussion but then I realized there is a Suggestion board so its being copy and pasted
This game is a blast, I liked EVE a lot as well even though I dont play anymore
They did a great job with DUST, I like the gun sounds, the atmosphere, the graphics, the vehicles, it's all really great and well done. Cant wait to see how they tie it in with EVE. I have a feeling it's going to blow my mind. I am slightly concerned that DUST players with ties to strong nullsec EVE corps will have a massive ISK and therefor vehicle and equipment advantage, but I am sure they will figure things out well.
There is a part of the game that causes immediate concern for me - how the radar works and how enemies show up as red blips on the screen
Maybe I just dont understand the system but it doesnt seem to work perfectly or even logically right now, people show up from across the map when they dont seem to be firing their weapons or spotted by anyone. In a recent game I was running in the open from one control point to another and a red blip marked a sniper that was hidden on a ridge, even though none of my allies saw him and they had not fired yet. I was able to dodge their shots and close within range to shoot them even though if I had not been notified or their presence their location and patience might have paid off for them instead. I know there are skills that I think apply to this but I dont understand how they work.
So I have a few suggestions for improving the system. I think enemies should only appear on the radar and on the screen as red ^s if they are firing their weapons. Maybe some of whatever drives the current system or some automatic team-member-spotting enemies resulting in marking could stay in place but I dont think its needed. It seems enemies locations are shown waaay too often right now.
The second part of the change would be to borrow one of the best things about the new TRIBES game. There is a single button press that points out an enemy or location to your team. If you are aimed at an enemy heavy and press the key, you broadcast 'Enemy Heavy Sighted!' to your team and the location is visually marked for them, the way markers work in DUST now. If you point at a tank it says 'Enemy Tank Sighted!' etc. Similar to how the current Objective Marking for Squads works in DUST, you can aim at an objective and with one single button broadcast to your team 'Attack Objective A!' or 'Defend Objective B!' Based on what You see but your team might not. I think DUST would GREATLY benefit from a functionality like this that allows for rapid teamwork and communication.
Agree? Disagree? Do you all think the frequency enemy locations are displayed is fine right now? Is there some system in place I dont understand? Would the 'enemy sighted' and 'attack objective' button be a bad idea?
Thanks

Just in case you need clarification about the current system: People show up on the map when they are being looked at by an enemy, and they are within spotting range. When someone is spotted, they show up to everyone on the enemy team. Spotting can be escaped simply getting out of the field of vision of the enemy. Dropsuit signature is how easily you can be detected by an enemy. There are skills and modules to increase it, and there are modules to make spotting enemies better and at farther ranges. Firing your weapon has no effect on this. This is why people can show up on the map even without you or your squad mates seeing them, or them firing their gun. Others on your team can be seeing them, and broadcasting their location to you.
With your example you mentioned none of your allies saw the enemy, how can you be sure?
My opinion: I think the current spotting system makes sense considering these are futuristic suits. Why wouldn't an onboard computer broadcast the location of enemies to all teammates, but instead make you actively have to do it yourself?
I also think that nearby gunshots fired in one's radius should show up on one's minimap as well as the HUD overlay. The radius of detection can be around 20 meters, and maybe depend on skills, and equipment relevant to stealth and sensing. This means if you sneak up behind an enemy, and fire your gun close to him, you will be detected.
Such a system would open up the possibility for a new variant of guns; stealth guns. A stealth variant of a gun could remain undetected while firing within the outer region of the gunshot detection radius, but not everywhere within the radius. Example: A stealth variant SMG can fire within 20 meter detection radius of an enemy, and still not be detected by the enemy's suit, but if the stealth SMG if fired within 5 meters of the the enemy, then the person firing the stealth variant SMG would be detected.
Tacnet system can identify all friendly locations (like when opening the map and seeing all the friendly dots). If the locations of the friendlies are tracked, then all it has to do is ignore weapon discharge from locations matching friendlies. The technology is there. |

Excellent post OP and I wholeheartedly agree. In fact I would take it a step further and suggest that the only thing giving away an enemies postion when they fire a weapon would be a clearly visible wuzzle flash that would get your attention and from there the spot and mark system you suggest would take over. Or even have a marked enemy only visible to your squad and it would take the squad leader to also mark this enemy to make him visible to other squads. You hit the nail on the head by stating this would increase teamwork and communication which I agree Dust lacks at the moment.
I have yet to say anything into my mic. Not because I am anti-social, there is simply nothing worth saying. Much of what needs to be communicated is done for you other than: "Hey guys, let's try to secure A". "A" is clearly visible from anywhere thus no need to respond verbally.
For me, it totally kills the immersion when I see a big orange diamond shooting across the screen, serveral orange arrows bouncing about and an orange square zipping around all while I am in game starring at the side of a mountain. This stuff seems to be here with this whole "if you choose to play games on a console then you are a mindless, drooling fool" and you would be yelling "i r bored, I R BORED" unless the game takes you by the hand and shows you where to go and who to shoot. I find this mildly insulting. |
