Got this idea from here, but the thread has provided nothing but pages of diarrhea.
Using the sprint function to be able to sprint from side to side (strafing) would be a really cool feature to have in this game. Like DUST Fiend states, it would consume stamina. It would also be dependant on the dropsuits mobility stat. So scouts would be amazing at strafing while heavies would fail at it.
There are many other things you can tweak and mess with this idea. Like perhaps make strafing not quite as fast as a full-on sprint. You could make the accuracy of the weapon you're using drop while sprint strafing (I'm personally not a fan of this idea).
But...But...this is a tactical shooter. Take you tap dancing shoes and sashe out of here!! NO. This game is much more than just a tactical shooter. If you have been paying attention to what CCP has been saying about this game, you'll know that they are trying to create something for EVERYONE. Why do you think the reviews for this beta almost always compare this game to Battlefield AND Halo (two completely different FPS playstyles). Yes. This game does have tactics. Squad/team management, coordination, and movement through the battlefield are all important. But that's only half of the FPS experience. Knowing how to take over a heavily defended objective should be as important as being actually "physically" capable of executing the plans.
Do you want to be a strafer? Level up your mobility, stamina, and endurance skills and equip their respective modules. But say goodbye to extra health and whatever else you could have fit into those slots. And pray that CCP forgets to introduce webifiers to the game. Every item, every move has a counter
So with that in mind, Sprint strafing will help add a new dimension to fighting. Currently, the only exciting thing that goes on in the game is when people are bunched up, defending and attacking an objective. But that doesn't happen all the time. Or if it's happening you're not there because you are defending something else or maybe you are trying to make your way there. This makes up a large portion of the actual gameplay. I feel that if i'm not participating in an epic firefight, i'm not having fun. I spend the majority of this game running towards something, while running into 1 or 2 people at a time. These little 1v1 2v2 are annoying because they happen randomly and in close/medium quarters. The reason why i'm not having fun in these little skirmishes is because I feel sluggish and restricted when i'm trying to move. I want to dance and fight or run and hide. I want those options. Currently, in cqc it's whoever saw who first, regardless of fittings.
Considerations
In order for this idea to be successful, a few things have to happen first:
Acceptable/stable frame rate
acceptable/stable hit detection
Dual Shock control sensitivity adjustments (no, i'm not talking about increasing/decreasing sensitivity through the option menu)
Webifiers
I feel that this is a really good idea for a game mechanic and it should be discussed constructively. This idea will help make Dust define itself as it's own unique shooter as well as making the biotic skills/modules more legitimate.
