Aren't genres themselves though just that? A niche'? You could classify almost anything a niche' simply by definition. By which even the likes of Call of Duty is just that a niche' game. This game though will be fine in terms of population. CCP has a built in five hundred thousand strong following, combined with Sony's built in multi-million population of homse console buyers, fueled by the facts that this is a free to download and play game application and an FPS with another built in multi-million fanbase. This game has the potential to grasp literally millions. Even if it only grasps a million or two the first year that is above and beyond what most titles should hope to have for launching. |

The grass is green, the sky is blue. What else is new?
Eve Online is also a niche game due to it's hostile and structured corporate environment with an economic system mimicking that of the real world complexities of the global market. Funny enough, more people are now joining Eve because if that. Once Dust links up with Eve Online and shares in the economy and corporate structure, I have no doubt about the potential for Dust. Of course, there will still be people who just want to be hand-holding care bears who are risk aversed like those in theme park mmo games. |

i think what he is saying is that this game will be a "cult" game.
niche doesn't really fit the bill.
a "cult classic" is a thing that gains diehard long term fans because of its dedication to a genre or core idea as well as its obscurity. people who view things as cult classics tend to actually hold them up as gems amongst stones.
so in a way, yeah this might be a cult classic. it won't take the market share of ALL the ps3 games and all age groups
but i think for the target market, after retail, minus some tweaks and balances, yeah, you're gonna find this one is a cult classic.
might even change how the other devs and publishers approach games.
can u imagine buying your way thru the kits in bf3? can u imagine persistant modern day "wars" fought with a 514 infrastructure on a frostbite engine.
games like 514 could make that possible.
