I'd like to know this as well. I've heard they don't work very well, but according to the description it seems like they'd be pretty useful. |

Would it be useful prior to using an orbital strike? Does it only show the enemy locations on the overview map and not on the mini map? |

I don't get it, why would I spend my skill points on this if I already have it. Unless, it uses some kind of scanning that imprints them on the radar permanently until they die. |

They work, perhaps not the way you think though. Try it again. Its very directional, and short range. |

Saying this is great, but support of your statement by explanation is much better. If you feel you have a good grasp of this, feel free to explain it. I've played with it and found it to be unclear what's going on, as have not seen any result. This, with a scout suit as well.
For me, they seem very un-developed and needing fixing.
Aim the device, and click.. do I keep it on, or release?
Do I have to hold still while it's "thinking" or is that a time where I can do whatever, and just wait for the results to appear?
Are these more effective with Scout suits vs other types?
What modules (range / precision) affect the reading results? |

I'm still testing these out, so far they seem to be directional but the range is so short on them its hard to tell if i've spotted a person with my own eyes or the scanner, range should be doubled from 75m to 150m, in a CQC situation with lots of walls blocking LOS, i think this scanner will be very useful I need to play with it more but I think you hold the trigger down when using these and scan around like a metal detector.
Giving scout suits one of these built in or a built in buff towards them would go a long way towards making them more relevant on the battlefield, i'd imagine something like 400% bonus to active scanner range 50% better scan resolution. |

Vehicles start with a 100m range on their scanner, as they are bigger, i have yet to experiment with them either.
I have played with the dampeners and I haven't noticed people not being able to see my red dot, but I have noticed it seems to reduce the damage I takes from missiles, i do not know if this has something to do with the missile tracking or not, but there seems to be a legit reduction in the damage i take from missiles compared to other modules. |

Yeah my trials of using 2 militia dampeners seems to work, and I had clear LOS on a sniper that was untagged on a hillside, so I'm guessing he had that sort of thing going on as well. He sniped once to try to hit me, and his Chevron disappeared shortly after his shot. I had to scope in to find him (and counter-snipe). |

I don't wanna sound selfish, but how do you earn WP/SP with it? I'm all about helping the team, but all the other equipment I can use in that slot helps the team AND gives me WP. If there are no WP in it for people I don't see it getting used.
Hopefully the devs give the community some info on this thing, otherwise nobody is gonna test it for them. |

Yeah, I agree since it does help the team, it should earn WP like most other beneficial actions. |

Performed a test last night during an ambush. Fitted a LAV with a scanner, and set it up on a small hill just outside of, and next to, the base's walls. Enemy CRU was on the other side of the wall. We got signals for probably every hostile spawning at the CRU. I had to make sure the LAV had line of sight to the CRU though, and the hill I parked on was barely high enough to see over the wall. I activated the scanner and stepped out the LAV to make sure my suit passive scanners didn't pick up players.
A visible scan field emanated from the LAV, omni-directionally. So aiming doesn't seem to be required. The active scanner works, even when you're not driving the vehicle.
The active scanners work, but the limited range and duration make them cumbersome to use. They would be helpful if their scan range was tripled, and the scanning duration was permanent. Real radars don't stop sending signals after 20 secs. Stacking bonuses with the deploying players Scan Radius and Precision ratings would be a plus. |

I spent a lot of time/sp last build trying to make these work, until CCP acknowledged that they were broken. My impression was they were pulling them from the market until they could fix them.
Haven't looked at them since I'm kinda suprised they're still on the market.

For infantry they should be deployable equipment, like Nanaohives, that scan for enemies within X radius of them. Since they are scanning they have a HUGE signature radius and always appear on the enemy's map.
Benefit: Allows allies to see all enemies within X radius of the scanner (except maybe sensor damped scout suits).
Drawbacks: It is always visible to the enemy so by deploying one you're putting down a huge target.
For vehicles: Same as above except higher powered and mobile. Put it on a LAV and turn it on. It will display all enemies within a larger X radius but the LAV is always visible on the enemy's map while it's active.
This would make them very tactical as they identify the location of enemies (huge help) without being cumbersome to use. But, they have a serious drawback in always being visible on the map. |

Are we talking infantry or vehicle mod? Because the infantry equipment was taken out of market for work, but I still have one left and I have the SP to use it. Must find out what happens!
In codex, they were pretty lame, they only worked up to a limited degree and were pricey as hell. |

I used them and had one in a HAV used against me last week (~1st week Jan 2013).
When I used one in a LAV it sent our a visible signal pulse and it showed more Reds immediately. With a little more detail if I recall correctly. I was in a bit of a fire fight so didn't take down enough data. And I don't like to burn down ISK heavy LAVs all that often.
Then I got hunted by a HAV, cause it got all Kitten Breath about being Militia Swarmed, and I was definitely spotted while it was obvious that my signal had dropped from their passive scanning. Until someone more significant threaten it I was doubting being able to escape. It also produced a significant visible scan signal. Pretty. Prettier from the other side I suspect.
So, working. But not to the degree that makes CCP think we should use them. Although they were left in the market. Might be fixable on the server side?
The Drop Suit version says Passive if I am not mistaken. Which would leave me to guess that it wouldn't add to your profile as no visible signal results. Maybe that is the broken one. I use them when I have a slot available. But only for a Sniper which means just one special build with Scan and Prof modules. |

I used to use scanners for certain situations on the last build (they worked goldenly for me.) However, those same situations that I have been put into trying to use an active scanner on this new build, not getting the results I had gotten before. Not sure what they did this build, but they are definitely broken at this point. (sad day) |
