Currently for someone to use squad commands without opening the map, the have to open the item selection wheel (R2), then press R3. This is not always clear to new squad leaders. I have an idea about how to make the ability to use squad commands without the map more obvious.
Have a shortcut to the Squad command wheel within the item selection wheel. By this I mean when someone opens the item selection wheel, one of the items in the wheel will be an icon representing Squad Commands.
When the player selects that icon, it will open the Squad Commands wheel if he is the squad leader.
If a player is not squad leader, then he should still see the icon, but not be able to use it; it should say "You must be the squad leader to access squad command" when the player tries to select it. This will let them know that squad commands at least exist.
Just open the item selection wheel and the option to open Squad Commands is right there. No need for esoteric button combinations. I think this will help a lot of new players who are genuinely interested in playing tactically with their squad. |

Anyone else find the current method counterintuitive? |

Very.
Not only is it counterintuitive it's sometimes nonfunctional. The number of times I've had to go into the big map to assign a capture target is staggering. There seems to be very little contextual sensing of objectives under the cursor if you're not standing within 10 M of the thing you want to mark.
In your other thread about expanding on non-vocal communication I brought up the idea about Holding R2 and then tapping L2 to toggle into the communications menu... maybe we could take that further and tap R1 or L1 to bring up SL commands. It would certainly make it easier to navigate the SL command submenu because we wouldn't have to worry about the R3 becoming "unpushed."
What about rotating or tipping the SIXAXIS controller? Too much? |

How about pressing R2 to bring up the weapon wheel, then triangle to switch to the command wheel? |

I think there is a problem with any combination of pressing buttons, because new people won't always know about those combinations. It needs to be something that people will clearly know is available, or easily find out. Another solution aside from getting rid of button combinations would just for an on screen message to show up to instruct squad leaders how to bring up the Squad Command wheel. |

How about
- L1 to zoom in on something
- Press-Release R2, get a menu of squad options for "something" (R2 is not normally used when zoomed)
- Choose option with arrow keys or right stick
- Select chosen option with X or cancel with O
Visual feedback
- The menu identifies the targeted item and shows it's squad leader options
- The chosen item is hilighted
- The result is communicated with the existing message to the squad and the existing 3D spotting.
