Use the EVE system, where you buy a skill, then start training it, making the level available once the skill is fully trained.
I think one of the problems with people not getting to where they want to be, is because with a large amount of SP unallocated, they get tempted on using it on other things along the way. Using the EVE system forces players to plan ahead. |

No. and here's why:
This is a shooter. Not a planning MMO or RPG or a tactical chess game - though some of those aspects are there.
I disagree with the OP. This is also not an RPG or MMO. It is a hybrid for sure, but that is shooter first other genre after. So you must appeal to the shooters first.
In the mindset of an MMO player it makes perfect sense but to an FPS or action game player the idea of time limiting one's progression is laughable and would cause people to quit.
FPS play is based off of input = reward. Put in the time you get the paycheck. Like an hourly job. You seem to want to move to a salary system of 'you'll eventually have this pay grade if you wait' regardless of the hours or effort you put in. That is not what makes a FPS fun.
Strategy games and other types of play would benefit from the 'over time' idea. But not this. It would mean the only sp one would get would be the passive kind with a time limiter on how you could spend it. It would be like having 3 million dollars and only being able to spend 60k on your favorite thing a year (cars, houses, booze, whatever). The mentality in the idea is off for the crowd that plays the game. (It's just marketing) |

totally agree RedBleach if anything they should give people with higher scores a bit more isk and sp and those who do poorly a bit less, however giving those who finish the game with the lowest score some isk and sp after all they did contribute some IE 1 place get more then 2nd however last place gets a cookie too. Then again I dont mind however it is set up now really.. just a thought |

You guys need to realize that Dust and EVE both are MMORPG's, Dust just has an FPS on the end (MMORPGFPS). The OP is aware of that, however it seems that the two above me don't entirely get it.
In EVE, you play the role of an immortal capsuleer, roaming the starts conquering the galaxy piece by piece. In Dust, you play the role of a mercenary, fighting for the highest bidder in the war for the universe. Looking at Dust with the mindset "this is an arena shooter" will cause the skilling and gear progression feel slow, you need to look at it with the mindset that "this is an RPG, although the fighting system is that of an RPG". In a sense, it's more like Boarder Lands.
The skilling is fine, and if you are incapable of making a plan for yourself (like me) you should just deal with having low level gear for a while, as if you really are skilled at FPS games, you will do absolutely fine against anyone with high level gear. |

Having the ability to que skills might be nice, sort of a hybrid system. Keep the same SP gains in Dust as now (tho perhaps at a somewhat higher rate) and allow players to plan a bit, perhaps even select a skill to have passive skill gains apply to as they come in until it levels up?
Not a fully fleshed out idea but perhaps there's some potential in there |
