I told one of my non-DUST friends about the current farming fix and he asked this very good question: Was this fix really to hinder farmers or was this fix to really to increase AUR sales/revenue? I noticed last night that AUR usage has greatly increased to over half of the players I saw during the four hours I played last night. After all, AUR appears easier to replace than ISK any more and I say that because my last match I got second place overall with 11/3 KDR and received 5K SP and 45K ISK which caused me to go into the red that match with only a few deaths. |

Interesting speculation, but did you notice an increase in aurum usage or did you only notice aurum gear more? |

I would say that might make more sense as a effect from the minuscule isk rewards. It did cross my mind that CCP has set up a system where AUR is necessary because of the tiny isk given after matches. |

As one data point, I purchased most of the old Milita BPO's for AUR to conserve ISK so I could try out dropships. Now I did have enough laying around from two Merc packs that I didn't bother to calculate what the read dollar cost is, especially as I'll get it back in a few weeks with the next build.
The move definately does encourage AURUM purchases, though I'm not sure if it's actually required by the ISK rewards. I would also hesitate to claim it was deliberate commercial motivation rather than a side effect of attempting to introduce more thought to the cost of losses. |

Just find a corp with decent funding and you wont have to buy AUR. That, or use the militia starter fits and save up your ISK. Not like it's impossible to earn money that way. |

In my opinion, it's only logical everyone is using their AUR right now. We just reset and everyone is back to nothing. AUR items allow you to have better gear without having the level of skills to use that tier. SP also takes longer to acquire now. Of course everyone wants to have an edge, hence more AUR item usage right now. Additionally, people need to bank a lot of ISK to purchase skillbooks. You can't purchase skills with AUR. So, it's far more economical to use the AUR now, bank the ISK, and when you have the ability to increase a skill you will then have plenty of ISK to buy the books and support the ISK cost of the higher tier gear. Once people get their skills up and and have ISK banked, they will no longer need that little edge and conservation and you will see the use of AUR items drop off and ISK items rise. |

I had exactly the same thought. Right now I am happy to burn through the AUR I have from my merc packs (3), but I wont do the same once it goes live. I will set a budget about the same as a monthly mmo sub and if I can play within that budget fine. If find that I am unable to survive on isk rewards once my AUR has gone I probably wouldn't play for long.
I am guessing CCP are balancing right now so no point in second guessing.

Considering that the recent promotion of the merc pack surely has lead to massive sales thereof, you are bound to see more AUR items... |

Thanks for all the great answers and thoughts. I was expecting to get flamed over this question but my friend's question was a plausible question to ask. Anyway, I was seeing AUR used more. There's no way I can tell if AUR is being purchased more. All I know for sure is my brother who I was playing with doesn't use AUR (had it via the merc pack) started using AUR last night after constantly being put down by a Killswitch GEK. All in all, I can't truly say if CCP did this on purpose or if this is all coincidental; I am merely speculating.

I'm actually looking at getting the merc pack for the AUR and the Toxin, all the other stuff would just be bonus gear I'll sell once the ISK market is opened up. |

I agree with this theory. If I had plenty of aurum I would do exactly this. Besides, it's not like no one had aurum to start with anyways. A lot of us had hoarded aurum since the earliest build which was many months ago. |
