Unfortunately I am finding this build to be a disappointment. Possibly the worst update yet. I heard something about more pew, pew, less QQ and so had some raised expectations...
But it seems like the game has lost it's way. Has no vision. Doesn't know what it wants to be. Continues to flounder.
And things keep getting, to put it bluntly, dicked around with for no apparent reason.
DId I miss the threadnought that went twenty some odd pages wherein it was much reiterated that there weren't nearly enough precision orbital strikes a minute in DUST 514?
It is as if they took the one thing that really seemed to be working fairly well in the last build and thought "Well, people seem to like the Orbital strike! Let's give them bags full!"
But that is like saying, "Children like candy, let's feed them nothing but candy!" Soon you have a lot of turgid, diabetic fat assed kids slouching around with mood disorders and eventually have to admit that all candy, all the time is not such a good idea.
The game looks a lot punchier. Not in a good way. In the Gallente merc quarters it almost looks like the character was animated with a xerox machine set to super high contrast! Maximum reflections! And this carries through to the rest of the game. There is a difference between bright, colorful, and garish. It is as if someone aiming to push the game beyond the "brown is real" trappings of many recent guns and gear games went a little too far. OK, graphics and textures get a pass, since those are easy things to dial in relatively quickly. But it is more that the game took a number of things that already looked great and tweaked them for no good reason, and that the game as a whole is beginning to feel cheesy. Atmosphere wise.
And finally, DUST 514 does not strike a fine balance between the serious strategerie of tactical shooter and gumball machine giggly fun of an arcade shooterGǪ so much as enter the brave new world of turn based shooters. I can't believe the game is even slower and clunkier than it ever was before in any build I have had the privilege to thus far be a part of. The intro seemed to imply fighting in DUST 514 would be fast paced and hectic. Yes, it is something of a challenge if you don't plan your approach toward the opposing team the day before you enter an instant battle. God forbid you should have to turn or move to the side in the heat of a fire fight.
Thus ends my rant. I have been a staunch fan boy, and will still passionately defend this game against ignorance and those that just don't seem to get it. But it sometimes seems like no one gets this game. Including the people making it. I am not sure if I get it anymore. If I ever did.
To end on a positive note, I like that the weird camera-is-its-own-light-source thing that was happening by the elevator (that's an assumption) doors behind the spawn in point in the warbarge got fixed. That was always a little weird. Maybe it's the little things that we can be thankful for. Keep the expectations in check, and appreciate the small stuff... |

I remember SP / WP farming from previous builds (favorite was during the days of infinite vehicle drop bug where one player with a couple nanohives and a swarm launcher could gain upwards of 200,000 sp in a game) but not the Orbital Strike spam. I am well versed in dying to the downside of fast strafing immortal scout suits. And for all the threads that called for a fix to the core gameplay, I always believed that was very close. Just needed a few subtle adjustments and it would gel. But many adjustments have been far from subtle and for all the great moments the game offers core gameplay is just not there.
I dropped this in discussions partly because I have a question for the EVE players out there, to wit:
Is this the CCP way, and is worth while to have faith that all will get worked out eventually? |

Ah, yes. Go heavy or go home, kind of thing.
1 V 1 strafing fights were not my thing and I would usually die anyways.
The slow gets me when I realize I need to get to cover, but I can't get to cover, and the only way I would have been able to get to cover was if I had realized that needed to get to cover a minute ago.
It is almost like the game has been tweaked to mimic a twitch shooter (low hit point, high damage, if you get the drop on your opponent, you get the kill no matter what) only in super slow motion. The only thing that shields, armor, etc. allows you to do is slowly turn while you are getting blasted to death.
Not always.
But in this environment the heavy suit would be the way to go. Since all the other suits fight more like the heavy now anyways. It seems like the game is getting slower, and slower, and...
Edit: And about this: OMG STOP IT"S GOING TO BE PATCHED WHAT IS THIS THREAD I DON"T EVEN FFFF
Thank you for all of the capital letters. I played one night of new build and this was more of a first impressions of new build rant. SP/ WP farming and Orbital Bombardment were available all last build. But the orbital strikes were not being spammed like they have in this build. They are now super easy to get, which leads me to believe that the mechanic was tweaked. But it wasn't broken or in need of tweaking, based on how it worked last build. Which was just fine. Thus the title of the thread. There would be no need for a patch, if only they had left well enough alone. Your capital letters thus support my theory. And so I thank you. |

Billi Gene wrote:so I am to understand that rushing in to stand 10 metres from an enemy with an AR, and then dancing back and forth and side to side... is optimal play? In all seriousness 10 metres may be a little to close standing wise when that person is trying to kill you with automatic weapon fire.
If that is what you call tactical play.. .
No, that is the flip side of tactical. That is more on the arcade shooter side of the spectrum. Where you can charge your oponnent 1 V 1 jump over their head, do a 360 firing all the while and kill them dead. But yeah, Doing the barn dance on ol' CQC ranch was also somewhat silly.
But as pointed out in several other threads, the solution was to fix the hit detection. Did turn and strafing speed also need to get adjusted? Turn speed also seems slower. I will take being able to move back and forth and side to side over the increasingly agonizing slowness of the game.
See also some of my replies above. Especially about taking cover.
Optimal play in a science fiction game should not be bogged down in reference to real reality realism.
I feel like sometimes I am counting down and a one
and a two
and a three
between pushing a button or cranking on the analog stick and something happening on screen. And I am old and slow with poor reflexes. Sluggish gameplay doesn't seem optimal. I have changed my controller settings around and tried almost all possible combinations of X and Y sensitivity. Tracking speed also seems very slow with some weapons.
I am not really joining up with the nay sayers, but the game does not so far offer fast and frantic gameplay.

xprotoman23 wrote:this game hasn't been fast paced since Replication
Character movement/ strafe and turn speed seemed about right (for me, was immersive, and fit my expectations of playing the role of a super soldier mercenary, without being overly cheesy) in that build.
Would sacrifice some of that mobility if it meant better hit detection, better lag compensation.
But of all the increasingly slow builds since then this one (Codex) just seems too slow. |
