I haven't seen very many threads on skill planning or skilling in general. I would like to provide a clear skill tree map(which is due to change at the discretion of CCP) so that you can train in quick specialized manner. And i will show the OMG i can use everything way. this will be a fairly lengthy post but a good read none the less.

Both methods have there merit and over lap at some point. I'm not saying there is a better method just a method of preference. I train my skills the slow way but i find this is the most rewarding for me and its pays off heavily over time. My method is the same method i use to train skills in eve. So lets review!

In dust the major skill tree's are:
 Drop suit's
 Handheld Weapons
 mechanics
 engineering
 vehicle command
 electronics
 Handheld Weapon proficiencies

From here I combine skill trees so that i can proceed to the skill plan functionally i.e components to my soldier, dropsuit, weapons, vehicles. I then train everything to 5 with in the skill tree. Sometimes items have the functionality of a rock and i'll only train to 4. I'm not only shooting for proto suits but i'm training for proto everything as i go. during this phase I spend not a cent on any suit, weapon, mod, or vehicle. The money accumulated is my saving grace. For instance my goal is to play a logi. Noticing the utter versatility of the suit I make sure i can use every weapon, mod, and logi suit available to me. This makes it very easy to switch to any suit i want after. The logi suit can literally be a sniper, av suit, frontline, and support. So i have to train accordingly to my spec.

So lets see the actual skill plan, ok!

 Infantry skills:
 Dropsuit Command 5
 Minmatar logistics 5
 engineering 5
 energy grid upgrades 5
 shield operation 5
 shield upgrades 5
 shield management 5
 mechanic 5
 armor upgrades 5
 repair systems 5
 Electronics 5
 nanocircuitry 4
 Sensor upgrades 5
 Vigor 5
 Mobility 5
 Endurance 5

 Weaponry Skills:
 Weaponry 5
 light/heavy/sidearm weapon capacity 5
light/heavy/sidearm weapon capacity reload proph 5
 light/heavy/sidearm weapon rapid reload 5
light/heavy/sidearm weapon rapid reload proph 5
 light/heavy/sidearm weapon sharpshooter 5
 light/heavy/sidearm sharpshooter proph 5
light/heavy/sidearm upgrade and upgrade proph 5
 assault rifles, smg's, ect..

As you can i've made things easier for when i'm ready to buy a mectric kit-ton of mods for my suit. Whilst cross training only requires me to train the suit to x lvl. This method may be entirely too slow for some who just quickly train the things needed for their suit. But by far this is a very rewarding way to train. Jack of all trades master of none!
