I managed to get a bit of time to play today, and might even get to do so again some time this weekend. I've decided to start using my dropship correctly, so I fit a Myron with an mCRU and started hanging out near objectives and other places where combat was taking place hoping to give my team an edge in terms of rapid spawn-in and support fire.
The result? No one used the dropship in the first match, and only about five over the whole match in the second.
So, what do you want from a dropship to make it worth your while to use it as a transport and forward spawn point?
- Should I be directly over the objective/battle, so you can drop in and start shooting right away? Or would you rather be back a little way, perhaps where you'll have some cover?
- Should I be static or motile? That is, do you want me to be moving from one objective to another, or should I pick one and stay there until it's no longer useful to spawn there?
- Are you interested in being picked up, or only in spawning in the DS?
- Is there some other factor I haven't considered?
Also, if you see me in game, I'll be in team voice chat waiting for people who want a sky-taxi service. Also, until I've found a good spot to attack I'll be tooling around at low altitude. If you want a ride, just shoot at me a couple times. I'll come get you from there.
Thank you for helping me provide you with better customer service! |

Generally, you won't find many bluedots smart enough to use the dropship. That aside, I'd say just make it a point to fly around the un-hacked objectives as much as possible. Gives spawners an easy way to just spawn right at them, vs some guys who just randomly fly all over the map. Of course, if you're taking fire, then you gotta move. |

Sorry, but unless you're grouped up, all people are looking for are kills. I personally recommend you join Betamax, we would appreciate a good Dropship pilot. Even if you don't want to join us as a corp, join the Betamax chat channel, and write LFS. |

You are doing exactly what a drop-ship pilot should do, just catching a bunch of peeps that aren't smart enough to recognize it. |

I'm not above flying with a good squad, though. You guys hang out in LFSquad? |

Good clear communication is #1. Before a match begins, you need to be typing into the TEAM CHAT something along the lines of "Dropship Pilot here, activate team comms to coordinate."
Otherwise, as an Uplink guy, I'm looking for someone to pick me up and drop me off near the objectives where I can get an uplink down in a safe to spawn location. |

Dropships pretty much got neutered between the fixes to AV and the nerf to resist modules. Also, people are REALLY stupid, and will spawn into your dropship, then sit there all match as you scream at them to get out.
Fit two good accelerated missile turrets, the shield or armor tank of your choice, grab two good gunners, and just kill stuff. Ignore everyone and everything else, prioritizing enemy vehicles. That's what dropships are for. If you use dropships to drop off soldiers right now, I'm sorry, but you're doing it wrong.
Just sayin. |

Just sayin. excellent argument,i shall counter with"maybe on big tanks but what about sniper placement on buildings and long cannon captures or emegency escapes"...picking up should be just for captured places in safe zones |

Dropships work surprisingly well as gunships, and I've been successful in taking out everything except T1 and above shield tanks*. I could probably get around that with the resist nerf. Just gotta have a decent gunner or two.
But the SP is crap for the pilot. I want to be ready for the next build when I can rake in the mad SP for transport assists!
*Near as I can tell, missiles get a 29% damage bonus against armor and a 31% reduction against shields. |

You're also more than welcome to scurry into ZionTCD (type in as shown here) and form up into a squad. We have plenty of eager gunners and people in fatty suits (like myself) that are always looking for rides. No pressure to join, if you like us though, we'd be more than willing to pick you up! (pun intended) If not, as with Icy Tiger's comment, you can always just offer your services and take your leave. |
