I know some people may not agree with this but shotguns are pretty bad right now. They shoot slowly, have a low rate of fire and if you miss then your screwed. The bad hit detection makes it hard enough to kill enemies but when you combine that with the fact that everyone strafes and jumps around it gets pretty hard. The closed in maps are alright but anyone more than 3 meters away won't even take damage. Today I shot a heavy at point blank range while he was standing still and it didn't even register. I'm not asking for a nerf or a buff to anything but I'm sick of dying after sneaking around being the enemy only to find out the hit didn't register and I'm now screwed.
I would also like to ask for a shotgun with a wider reticule that sprays bullets over a wider area but does less damage. It would be more like a support variant rather than a killing variant.
Leave your thoughts on shotguns. Do I just suck at using them? Does lag factor into it? |

Skill up the shotgun tree. There are some great shotgun mercs out there with some nice Shotties sneaking up on me everyday. |

Hone your skills, mate. I average 12-15 kills per game with my trusty CRG-3. Actually, shotguns might just be the most balanced weapons currently. Use cover to your advantage and let ARs empty their clip. Then jump them while they recharge. Boom.1-2 hit kill. Maybe 4 with heavies. |

it's even easier when they jump, you just aim where they land, and watch their face as they realise the horror of their action whil being unable to change direction in mid-air =D |

Brother, I have 0 skills invested in shotgun, and even the militia shotgun is beauty, especially in the deathmatches where you fight in close quarters.
The only thing you are right about is the detection at times, other than that, shotguns are good as they are. |

Even with the wonky hit detection & lag, the shotgun is plenty deadly. The shotgun requires equal parts patience & reflex. You have to time your shots just right or your toast. I still OHK with a militia shotgun & the breach varients have more range. The Shotguns are fine. I just wish they would give me my Creodon back on the market |

Man what are you smokin' o.0 Like it was said before, even the militia shotgun can be nasty. If I have any kind of armor damage, I get one-shotted all the time by shottie users. Heck, any T1 armor other than heavy and you are shotgun bait. They are not weak weapons, I think they are quite balanced in comparison to the other gear. |

Ok, first I'd like to state that the shotgun is BEAST, it puts the Fiend in DUST Fiend, trust me.
That aside, it IS still a little borked, in terms of hit detection; it's been doing this on and off since at least the second build. For some reason, it just doesn't register shots sometimes. I guess it's just more noticeable with the shotgun, since the difference between one shot and two could be the cost of your loadout. Strafing also really messes with shotguns, for those of you that get owned by shotguns, STRAFE. We have to predict where you're going, and you need to predict when we're about to shoot. Don't jump, as this guarantees a kill for any shotgun user worth his salt.
Also, backpedal as you strafe, anything to put distance between you and him. (against breach shotguns, rushing him might not be a bad idea. Sometimes getting up really close to them can work to your advantage, but it's a gamble because you're going to die if he manages to hit you.) You'd be amazed at how effective a nova knife to a shotgun scout can be.
My only other complaint is the whole, 2 rounds in the breach shotgun thing. Meh, meh, meh. |

From what I've noticed from using them as little as i have, their spray is even slower then the AR bullets, so you've got increased time to target, even on our nice AU servers with the low ping you need to lag shoot a little with these things, yesterday i shot at a running heavy and totally missed he was about 5 foot away from me running left to right, next time i found my self in this situation i aimed 1 foot ahead of where he was running and took him down to 10% armor in like 1 shot.
As for fighting at range with them just don't, get yourself a nice assault SMG and use that while your closing range on ppl, its a short range weapon too but at least they will have something to worry about while you close range. |

I use a shotgun 90% of the time and although they can be deadly, the HT in close quarters can be an issue sometimes. I have had times where I'll load a couple of rounds into a Player at point blank and do 0% damage.
By all means, I don't claim to be any sort of CQC master, but I do believe that I have some knowledge of the role. I usually get between 15-30 kills a game, and can say that it's a double edged sword. The shotgun really captilizes on peoples lack of awareness, and your task of killing an enemy is made so much harder if you are spotted.
My tips would be:
* Try and stick to areas where there is plenty of cover, and minimize the time you spend in vastly open areas. * Avoid prolonged battles. 90% of the time most weapons will beat the shotgun in battles that last longer than a few seconds. Try and bait the enemy into an ambush if the battle looks like it's going to last a little while. * Don't let yourself get kited by the enemy (they are backing of whilst firing at you as you advance), 90% of the time they will kill you. * Always look for routes that get you behind the enemy. * Don't bother with crouching, or aiming down the site (just fire from the hip). * Always stay on the move. * Don't be afraid to back out of engagements.
The last 1 is more crucial than you may believe. On numerous occasions (even up to now) I have thought "Sod that, I'm going to kill you!", and I have ended up getting killed in the process.
As I said above, I'm no CQC God, but I hope the tips above help you. |
