I'm very excited about the possibilities represented by Dust. It has the potential to be a total game changer for how games are done on consoles. And although there are many things to improve and many people have gone into great detail about them (I've even posted a couple of ideas), there is also much to love about what I've seen so far.
First, it's free. What better way to maximize your audience? This is a brilliant move by CCP. There isn't a single player out there who has ever played an FPS that won't give it a try just because of that.
Second, the depth. Even with all the things yet to be implemented there are near infinite combinations of characters to create with the skills and gear available.
Third, the dual currency economy. ISK for most things allows players to keep it free if they choose and AUR for players that want to get more out of it or have access to rare items.
Fourth, the integration with the perpetual world of EVE online. This creates all kinds of interesting possibilities. I've never played EVE, but I've heard some stories and can't wait to see how this plays out. It's an extremely ambitious goal to have these two unique experiences mesh successfully, but if it can be pulled off, Dust will be a game that continues to be played heavily for many, many years.
Finally, again the depth. Things such as having to buy that tank with money you earned over a long period of time makes the impact of losing that tank so much more meaningful. The length of time it takes to rank up in your chosen skills and the length of time that it takes to amass a pile of ISK ensures a more even playing field. The variety of skills and gear available means that everyone can create the merc that fits the way they want to play. Having to restock your dropsuit after a devastating loss will quickly teach those players who are used to running on their own with no regard for their team that it doesn't work that way here. I see the really good players being strategic with their merc building and specializing in a single area and then being strategic with their squad building so that all 4 members compliment each other. How about a squad of a couple of heavies, supported by a logistics for healing and an assault type to resupply their ammo? And that's just a single scenario of course. As players get a feel for the final game they'll adapt and we should see some incredible teams built. |
