I've seen TitGrabby. What's the problem?
I'd rather see a name that makes me laugh or even agitate me, so long as it has more creativity than Alvin21395 (or whatever random crap people come up with). It is odd that people can play a game that revolves around putting a bullet in someones head, but get horribly offended (and OMG petition because my feelings are hurt) by someones screen name.
People like you are truly disgusting.

And CCP do care - they have forced corps and alliances to change names in Eve. There was one I remember that was something fairly offensive in Eastern Europe as it had to do with a far right organisation.
So lets help CCP wherever possible.
Are these acceptable?
Baby Raper [any religious icon name] eatscock [Race] basher AIDS spreader Holocaust NeverHappened [1940's German Leader] wasRight
Clearly these are way over the line and I would have no hesitation in reporting these names.
Some do go over a vague line. Eve, Dust, MAG, et al also have a community policing system that is years in place. Maybe not so much Dust, but it's growing. If someone creates a name that is unacceptable to the overall community, that character will be shunned and left to a small contingent of other like minded sickos. More times than not, bizarre names like those listed are made to elicit a response. Why feed the trolls? Let them be, let them find their way to obscurity.
I have had names in past games be petitioned and deleted. My names have had generally (I thought) clever sexual connotations, as opposed to anti-semitic or racial ones (although in UO, I had a White Dragon named Cracker that got petitioned, no matter that I'm white) I do not blame the GMs for responding to the thin of skin. Folks need to get their sense of humor back. It's not like the guy with a screen name of Baby Raper is actually a rapist.
Point is, if there's ostacizing to do, let the general public do it in ways that are already established. Don't cry to mommy when your feelings are hurt.

War by nature is abusive. Having nicknames to intimidate or offend is natural to war. What rock are you people under? |

The world went and got all PC. It is indeed unfortunate, that people have become so afraid of what others may think of them that they repel free thought like a disease. Free thought includes humor, irony, and sometimes insults as well.
I see the person offended by a name that has a racial slur involved, maybe a strong sexual implication, or any other "offensive" nature, to be offended as a result of an over-compensation. Just as little guys drive big trucks (I'm a little guy, done the big truck thing), I have found that the holier-than-thou," OMG Im offended" crowd really tend to have the shoddiest moral character if you look behind the mask.
Some good examples have been brought up for names that should not exist. Most examples listed in this thread, I would not. I'd personally get a laugh out of killing or getting killed by Budda.
The fine line is, what is offensive? Someone could petition my name as offensive. Can I expect to find myself as Citizen1269375 in the morning? Who determines the level of offense and where is the line? In character creation, we kind of expect that if it survives the filters applied, we are good.
One of the things I have enjoyed about the CCP/Eve community for nearly ten years is a very welcome reprieve from the political correctness. There are boundaries, but CCP has not done the kneejerk reaction to the horribly offended in the past. Eve players have become used to this and now a new genre has been introduced, and some of them cry loudly. The natural checks and balances of a community do work also, as stated before. If someone is an insufferable jerk.. nobody will play with them and they get spit out. |
