There are many skills in the game that just have no use (dropsuit skills lvl 2 and 3, etc) they only unlock various items and other (sometimes similary useless) skills, but offer nothing at all themselves.
Players should always get some bonus for upgrading a skill, even if it's a small bonus. For instance, the logistics dropsuit skill could grant +5% remote repairs per level when using a logistic suit. Or just give the suits and vehicles boni based on skill level, like EvE ship hulls.
Of course, this could also add to the imbalance between high and low SP characters, but that will hopefully be less of an issue after implementation of the matchmaking system. |

I agree! There are so many skills that have no passive bonus when you level them up. Which is a shame. There should be more skills on top.
I would really love to see +movement skills that increase jumping, sprinting, run speed, fatigue, and agility. I understand tha they are goin to decrease how fast you can strafe, and possibly how fast you can turn right or left. I definitely agree with this change - fights feel more like Dancin than a duel to the death. However I feel we should also have the ability to skill into, and make our characters extremely fast if we want to focus on that.
Right now though every skill needs to add something. There shouldn't be skills that just are fillers to unlock only better equipment.

Some stuff could just be saving for future updates; right now, I'm pretty sure piloting doesn't do anything past level 1- probably going to be for other aircraft later. |

I'd expect skills that give no inherit bonus will have items that have inherit bonuses based on skill level to some degree. Things are getting more complex. It's like watching the birth of a star -- all of the atoms collapsing into each-other waiting for that moment when they explode into a perfect fusion reactor. |

There are no "useless" skills in this game, you just fail to see the gain. Yes, some are to "unlock" other items or skills but that is how the game is designed. If you didn't played EVE Online before it might be hard to see the gain from leveling some skills, but in time you will "see the light" :) Just keep playing enough. |

Lion, I think what you are addressing is the different game play styles. EVE players are certainly unique as even some of my good gaming buddies couldn't stand the 'free roaming universe' with little story - the idea of do whatever you want was too much for them.
And although this is in the EVE universe FPS players are a different breed. Rewards are needed NOW! and all the time. FPSers are in it for the immediate reward. Seeing the numbers flashing up on screen for kills, assists, and more is necessary to keep them interested. The thinking is very short term and flexible enough to move tactically on a map, switch play styles, change weapons, etc. all in the heat of the moment.
In contrast EVE requires time, lots of planning - next week, month, year, escape routes, politics, etc. and oh so much more. The long term thinking required hardly fits FPSers - not an insult or a sweeping declaration, just observation and study.
Therefore everything an FPSer does must have an immediate - even if small - reward to keep them interested and active. They might be skilling into the proto sniper rifles but getting nothing at lvl2 or lvl3 is frustrating, causing some to give up and call the game stupid. And they have every right - if a game doesn't fit their needs why should they play? Thus, in order to keep interest in the game and maximize the audience for DUST514 a reworking of the gameplay and setup to appeal to both short term interests and long term planners is a good call. |
