So I have been playing dust for only a week now, but I have been fallowing the game since a good month or so before E3. Also I have some background into EVE never played just kept up with the universe out of true nerd enthusiasm in a game built to function like a true economy.
Now we all know that this build is not completely awe inspiring. Along with many people believe that CCP is dropping the ball here, and this game is going to be a total wreck. Most people who dont feel this way have faith in CCP as a company to build something amazing. Even if this amazing thing is only amazing to a certain niche of the gamer society.
So to my real point sorry for taking so long just wanted to really point out some main things for use in my main topic of this post. Okay so has anybody ever thought that we are not really playing the actual build that CCP is working on. Just a build that they put together to not give anything away about the game and to test the issues that they are having at a faster pace by a larger QA pool(closed beta testing). Also by doing this people get an impression of what the game is going to be like and they tell their friends about it. Which gets out to the world how their game is going to be. Not a CoD killer and it is never going to be, It is not a CoD clone so that would be impossible. Rather it is going to be the game that CCP wanted to create for its supporters and fans. This can be seen as a stroke of marketing genius. By doing it this way they will weed out the people who will not enjoy playing the game and the people who will not be a positive influence on a game that they have created for their fans. This in turn will allow them to come out of the gate with real numbers to the amount of people who are going to be playing Dust 514. This remove that year of watching the numbers go up and down. Allowing them to customize a game to the amount and the personality of the populous of the people that will be playing Dust. There for their numbers should never decrease but more than likely grow as more people come in and find a game that they enjoy Also continuing the universe that they have spent almost ten years creating and nurturing to what it is to day.
This is based off of no facts just an idea that I came up with at work during work that I thought was cool and wanted to share with you guys. |

The updates come every month and a half or so. It is no secret that the build we have to beta is always well-behind the build CCP has internally. Or even the build that they're showing at places like E3 or the TGS. However, I don't think they give a **** about "giving away the game". There isn't a plot. There aren't any secrets. The reason they don't lay it all out for us is that things change a lot in development, and if they start talking about feature X that they may or may not do in the future, people will invariably feel like feature X was promised. Even if it turns out that feature X was crap or was cut due to time constraints.
That said, Dust will really appeal to some people and won't appeal to others. Just like EVE. It's a pretty specific type of game, and people who, yeah, love CoD or something to death, they may not appreciate every part of Dust. That's okay. CCP knows the game they want to make and knows their audience. Dust will be successful whether it's a "CoD killer" or not. Just like EVE. |

If ccp primarily wanted eve players to play dust because they knew what their general audience would be then why have dust be a ps3 exclusive? why not just have dust stay in familiar territory? On the pc! |

How does this have anything to do with this thread? The OP was wondering if we might be playing a special 'closed beta players build' that differed from the internal build(s) being developed and tested by CCP.
Nobody brought up anything about EVE players vs. Console gamers or PS3 vs. PC. So...what? |

Obviously the build deployed on PSN will be different from internal builds, cause in internal builds they can merge in branches and such at will to develop/test features. The PSN build will always be the most stable they can release of the feature and code that is done. |

You're ******* stupid. He was asking if they might have wanted dust to cater to the same type of crowd as eve, only on PS3, rather than on PC. |

Well, now...it seems your own first statement would apply rather well to yourself rather than to me. Perhaps you should read a little more closely.
Of course I understand what he was asking, I can read and comprehend English. But you didnt even answer my question.
I'm asking what a semi-inflammatory comment about the proposed audience for the game has to do with a question about multiple versions of the beta. There's no context for the comment, here, outside of the fact that Sailbot just wants Dust to be made available on the PC, perhaps exclusively. Maybe there is more...maybe Sailbot meant to contribute that he thought they are developing for the PC simultaneously? Sailbot? Any help here? |

The thing is PC gamers only make up a portion of the gaming market in general. CCP has already tapped into the PC market and is trying to expand onto the console market. |

The builds branch off and then remerge each release as they try different things. We are only behind in the sense that the experimental branch of any linux program is "ahead" of the main branch. |

I think one of the primary things that CCP is testing with this beta IS how the traditional fps community, which is their target market, responds to the game. The EVE players really don't count in terms of numbers, but their input is still valuable in terms of getting the 'flavor' of the game right(i.e. that it still feels like New Eden) .
The big concern for CCP is that they know the kind of game that they would like to write, and because what they would like to write is so different from what's out there, they've had to pitch DUST very hard to their partners and investors, etc.
I'm thinking that the single most important piece of data that will come out of this beta is an estimate of adoption rate from the fps community.
Given the emotive little-girl shitfest that is our beta forum, it will be one helluva datamining job to build THAT predictive model.

They are marketing Geniuses. They are members of Fortune 500 If you look at EVE <----- the V is a shape of a triangle. And the CCP logo with the dots, If you look at from above it's a pyramid when you connect the dots to the center.
Anyways, if they can manage to keep EVE in business for more than 8 years, they can do this too. |

Having the option to pay to get into a beta is a pretty alarming thing if you ask me. I've not known many games do this and survive very well post launch. Although it is becoming a growing trend of late it seems.
Personally I find it beyond tight. We offer our time to test the game and have to pay for the privilege.
Between us all, we've posted major bugs that are really crucial to keeping players interested yet menial things are being looked at and fixed. Just check the sticky in the bugs section and scroll to the current bugs there working on this week or last.
There's far far more pressing issues than the ones they're working on if you ask me.
I really want this game to succeed, but I'm not exactly sure what the game plan is for CCP. It seems a bit off the mark to me at this point. |
